My friend and I have started a small home based business making photo slide shows for customers. It has been word of mouth advertising and a weekly self-marketing group, but we have done several so far. We make on average about $200 a slide show, and have done large ones with over 400 photos, and much smaller ones. It is different from taking your own photos, but I enjoy other people's photos. I usually have to work on the photos--everything from washed-out colors to rips and folds. I use different software programs with all kinds of special effects, and I can add video too. My clients have absolutely loved their slide-shows, and one even brought a family together! They are becomming very popular for funerals, as well as most happy events. We did a 5oth birthday party show this past summer. I thought about going the stock photograpy route, but I am enjoying this so much more.

Which software do you use?

At the moment I am using the Pro Version of Memories on TV, Pro Show Producer, and Ultimate Pinnacle Studio 12. I mix and match all three programs using special features of each one, and then blend all the files together to produce the final show and set it to music.

I've debated doing something along these lines, just haven't quite dabbled into it yet.

How do you deal with the copyright of the music or does the customer provide the music they want on their slideshow?

I am doing these now as well, although I don't really want to haha. I am having the client give me the cuts they want to use.

When you purchase a song, wither on CD or as a legal download, you aquire the rights to make one backup copy of that song for your own personal use.
So for example, you could copy the CD as an audiotape or burn a backup CD-R.

When we work with your project, we assume that the slide show we are making with your song constitutes your legal backup copy of that song. We can
then use the song in your slideshow as long as:

The slideshow is only for viewing privately by your friends and family
Admission will not be charged to see the slideshow
The slideshow and DVD will not be mass-produced
The slideshow will not be resold or recopied
The slideshow has no impact on the market for copyrighted work

So the client provides the music you use in the slideshow?

I have a question, I do slideshows for my wedding clients... I include all their pics to a few songs they choose. I use an imac and have great difficulty with imovie and idvd that is installed on it, so I have been using windows movie maker on my daughters computer when she lets me. Does anyone know what software I could get for my mac to make slideshows fairly easily??

My wife is using Adobe Premier Elements (came free on our last two SOny Viaos). This has proved a really superb tool - much easier to use than windows movie maker. She is on a roll at the moment with quarterly installments on our daughter. Still trying to work out how to stagger children movies when a second comes along.

I use Photodex Proshow Producer to make wedding DVD's for my clients. They tend to be more popular than the prints/album. I give it to them in DVD format (for TV) and also as a web video and screen saver. I also use Adobe Premiere Elements for video. I am looking at upgrading to the full version of Premiere. After using Photoshop on stills, I feel like I am using MS Paint in comparison when using Elements to edit video. Very limited...
I bought Pinnacle Studio, but it just crashed all the time. My friend recently bought a Dazzle video import device that came with Pinnacle Studio software, and it crashed his computer as well. He removed it and now uses Premiere Elements.

Check Pinnacle Studio then. A brief google makes me think it comes in the MAC flavour.

I use Premiere Elements 7.0. $79.00
I think it has a MAC version.

If this link works, you can see my reunion video.

This slide show has some nice pics from Grace King High School 1984 as well as some from a reunion 5 years ago. We have another reunion coming up and I'm doing some slide shows for the party.

Oh well...don't use any WMG Warner Music Group music (which is just about ALL music ever recorded) in any videos. They will be removed.

BAD assumption. There's a good chance you won't get caught and have to pay big money, but you ARE breaking the law. You are using someone else's artistic work (their music) for profit - you are getting paid for the slideshows, right? You are putting their music in the slideshow, right? And getting paid to do it, right? Without the artists' permission, right? The rest of it does not matter.

Read the rights to music very carefully and perhaps consult and IP attorney. What you are doing is synchronizing music and pictures and what you need to do this is called 'synch rights'.

//www.newenglandfilm.com/news/archives/00july/music.htm
//depts.washington.edu/uwcopy/Using_Copyright/Compilations,_Music,_Images/Music.php

Now how would you ever get caught, you say? You never know who is going to walk through your door and what their job is, what their relatives do, what their pet peeves are. EVERYONE has a pet peeve - they don't like speeders or jaywalkers or people that talk with their mouth full, etc. All it takes is one customer to have an interest in the music business, is anal about copyright, etc and they can make your life absolutely miserable.

Is it worth the risk? IMO, no way. But then I make my living with my business and if for any reason I was closed down or fined tons of money I'd be ruined - business, reputation, financially, and perhaps be living in a box under a bridge (a better option than moving in with my mother in law at least).

You can give them the slideshow with rights free music or no music and be perfectly legal. What? You say they won't want that, won't pay as much for it? Then that is proof positive beyond any doubt that using 'real' music is making you a real profit - and you owe the artist/publisher/performer/writer/producer their cut (and you didn't think it was about the money, right?)

Prof Fate is right....the music is a BIG part of those slide shows. If you are making money from the slide shows...you are breaking da law !

See my previous comments...I had a slide show I made for myself and others to "look at" NOT to sell ! I was informed by Warner Music Group via Facebook that I was in violation because I was using one of WMG's songs in the video. It even went as far as to say that even if the video contains BACKGROUND music of a WMG song, it is in violation ! This means that if you video your kids playing guitar hero...and you can hear a WMG song...then you can not post that video on the web....

So I KNOW that selling slide shows with copyright music will not fly !

**I just read some of Prof's links...my god...there is something called Sync Rights...you need a Sync License to sync music to pictures...and this is ANYTIME...not just of you're going to sell the product....!
