I have a confession to make... I'm the world's worst caulker. When I try to caulk anything all I end up doing is making a big goopy mess that looks worse then when I started. I've tried all the tools and crap you can buy and it doesn't matter... it always looks like crap. HOWEVER... this weekend someone made me the world's best caulker with one small tip... use masking tape like you would if you were painting... HOLY CRAP! A small simple thing and now I want to caulk everything... Art please keep your comments to yourself;)... I couldn't believe how easy it made it and how professional it looks.

SO, I thought it would be a good idea to start a post where my fellow DPC'ers could drop a quick nugget of wisdom (not photography related) that may help make 2009 a little easier for the rest of us. With that being said...

Use masking tape when you caulk. It cleans up easy and leaves beautifully straight lines.

Since I was given that one I will add my own...

If you are getting knee surgery and plan on taking the pain medicine... make sure to drink plenty of water and maybe even some Metamucil. It's amazing what Vicodin will do to your digestive system...

if your hands smell like onions, wet them and rub the inside of a stainless steel sink

Heh, heh.

You like the caulk.

(Sorry, you said for Art to keep his comments to himself.)

I have no actual words of wisdom.

Had I not been told to shut up, I would have said "You're a sucker for caulk. I guess that makes you a..." - good thing you stopped me before I posted that!

my tip: When you are told to keep your comments to yourself, find a loophole. :P

Plastic 35m film cans hold exaclty two scoops of baby formula, enough for an 8 ounce bottle. Keep a few in the camera diaper bag.

When it rattles it's MAD!

if you don't know the answer to any scientific question...

surface area is almost always a good answer ;)

and yeah - masking tape is a good bet ( the blue kind that doesn't really stick too much - painters tape ) when applying caulk to a crack.

If you can't seem to get rid of that ugly brown/black ring in your toilet:

Before you to go bed, pour in a can of coca~cola. When you wake up, brush and flush. Gone! Like magic! :)

for ladies: mix 1/2 foundation with 1/2 face lotion, it will go on smoother and you won't have to use as much foundation while moisturizing at the same time!

for guys: if you need to strip wallpaper, get some really hot water, and sponge the wallpaper down. It will come off the wall without a problem. I've also peeled off the top layer of the wallpaper first, which makes the rest peel even faster.

I'll roll with the home improvement tape theme:

When painting your next room, the green "Frog Tape" is amazing! It does a way better job of keeping the paint from bleeding under and peels off easier than the standard blue tape.

Also, a general tip: it's always better in the long run to just do it right the first time.

Sticky door strike plate? use a little natural skin oil from your nose and apply it to the latch mechanism. Wala, quiet closings ahead! Dry skin? Lotion. :)

Got to second the frog tape... FAR better then that blue crap that bleeds! I have spent a LOT of time painting over the last year....

As for the caulk.... Run along and then run your finger over it while touching the 2 sides of the wall and comes out great - no need for extra tools. I have done more of this then painting over the last year (damn the prep always takes a lot longer):-/

Concerning matte cutters: measure a gazillion times and make sure you have right angles before you start cutting! Otherwise, things go painfully awry...

do not, I repeat, DO NOT try to unclog hair from a shower drain with lighter fluid. Buy some drain-o.

Don't clean your glasses/spectacles with wire/steel wool!

Mask worktops before cutting and voila! no, rough jagged edges:)

Vegetable oil on a paper towel will remove adhesive goo left from a price/brand tag.

That applies to non-porous surfaces......glass, china, painted surfaces (Like the stickers your four-year-old stuck to the car door), shower stalls.....

Try not to use the phrase "I'll fix it in Photoshop" it will make it easier if you just shoot it the way you want it to be shot. I learned that the hard way ;)

Isn't it amazing how caustic coke is? Why do they let us drink it?
