Maybe a little strident and opinionated, but I like them...One of these is worth a hundred 'nice shots' (imo). At least he lets you know exactly what he is thinking

Not only aiming at TheLittleIsland, but I find it very interesting that photographers often find comments like "Nice picture!" as helpful while contructive critisism is not helpful

My first responses are just as smart-ass so many times! But then I temper them.

The criticism is the most helpful. Especially if my entry is bombing and someone takes the time to tell me why. Then, I can start seeing it the way the viewer is, and often learn something from it. I may begin leaving "nice shot" and "interesting" unchecked.

i love it

This one stood out to me as incredibly honest and both a high compliment and a diss at the same time:

I would like you to know that I gave this a 4 because it's flawlessness becomes rather uninteresting. But hey, congrats.

It's a learning site, so I'd rather not have the brute force of a newspaper critic, but that being said, I'd rather have some uncensored feedback than nothing at all as long as it's honest.

I know it's been discussed before, but I really wish there was another option like or

I try to take the good with the bad. I have to confess that I do usually mark "nice shot" comments as helpful. At least it does let me know that I am connecting with the viewer. If the comment is constructive criticism, then it almost always gets a helpful. Things along the line of cropping suggestions, processing suggestions, compostion suggestions, etc. always get a helpful.

Comments such as "boring", "sucks", =[, I often do not rate as helpful because they leave no information as to what might have helped make the picture more valuable to them. True, they could be taken as just the flip side of "nice shot"... But that's just me...

In the end, any comment with some detail is helpful, and from what I read of the comments from the original subject of this thread, I would have marked the vast majority of them helpful. Yes they could be more tactful, in some cases, but still I would usually find them helpful.

Eeeeee. . .honest for sure. Opinionated, no doubt. But people like him are why people like me make such an effort to be encouraging, and much more prone to find nice things to say about people's work. I know there is a need for both, so I'm glad he gets to be the jerk :)

He hasn't been "the jerk" in nearly 3 years (he did make a few comments in 2006 and one in Jan 2007).

I'm not making fun of your post Sandy...just noting how far back this "harsh voter" is in the land of DPC.

Edit - typo.

And here I thought calling people out in the forums was not only bad form, but also against the rules. I guess not as I reported the post a while back and its still sits here. People are allowed to have opinions on the photos they comment on, regardless if you like them or not, if they dont break the rules they are allowed. However calling specific people out in the forums is not.

/back to my hole in the world.

I guess they don't worry about it if you're not around to defend yourself :)

I don't think he was being called out to deride his commenting, but rather to illustrate a very blunt style. We have a few people currently active who are equally blunt.

I may be wrong, I have been before, but when the title of the thread is "I know there are some harsh voters out there......."

And the first sentence says "but this guy takes the cake"

They are being called out, and by looking at some of the responses even direct name calling I'm pretty sure that what may have started one way has certainly gone personal.

And we wonder why direct commenting isnt happening? Maybe because of threads just like this complaining about comments that were made.

I think you make a good point Matt & I'll edit my previous comments accordingly. Along these lines, I sent a report for this thread because it was calling out a hidden voter and posting his/her comments during an ongoing challenge, but I guess that sort of thing doesn't quite bend the rules enough.
