Hi,
I'm praying to god that someone can help me. Tonight I downloaded some backup software to backup a large chunk of my photos from my internal drive to my external drive.
Stupid me chose the mirror function and what had happened was all the data on the external drive was deleted and replaced by the data from my internal drive.
I was only performing a test so the data copied to the external drive was no more than 3mb.
Does anyone know the safest way of attempting to recover my lost data? Is there any software that someone highly recommends or should I take it to a data recovery specialist?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Is your computer a Mac? If so, self-proclaimed Mac guru Shannon (scalvert) may be able to help. He's always given me advice and tips that have worked.
And surely there must be some PC people kicking around.
I can't offer any advice, just bump this thread every so often so it more or less appears on the homepage.

Try this site. They have software to recover lost files but it will not recover overwritten files.

I second this. Posted the exact same problem a few weeks ago (did an Erase All instead of erasing the last shot), and it worked like a charm. And it's free. It took a while for me using USB (a card reader is more ideal), but it was worth it. |

Nothing will recover a file if the space has already been overwritten.
Best practice is, once you realize you've reformatted or erased images is to remove the card and use the recovery software on it.

According to the DOD, you can recover data that has been written over 2 times. When I cleaned drives for the DOD we had to erase the data and write 1's and 0's back to the full drive. Then over write it a total of 3 times. Anyway all I'm saying is there might be a chance you can get your data back.
Try some of these programs. Most are free up to the point when you actually want to recover the files but download the programs and see if it can even locate them before you buy.

If you wrote 1's and 0's across the entire drive then any file recovered would consist of 1's and 0's, no?

That is why they made us do it 3 times because even though you write a layer of 1's and 0's across the drive you can still recover data that you wrote over. Think of it like sheets of very thin paper layered on top of each other. Even though you can write on the top layer and set it down on top of another piece of paper you can still see thru the top sheet.

It is still possible to recover the photos. Try this open-source software. It has worked for others in the past.

Thanks all for your responses.
After my post last yesterday I have since tried and purchased some software (Handy Recovery 4.0) which recovered everything I had lost and was extremely simple to use.
I was lucky that there wasn't much new data written on to the HDD!!
Which reminds me of something to note: When using recovery software, be sure that you recover to a different drive / card (not the drive / card you lost it all on)!! Otherwise you are effectively writing data to the area of lost data.
This could be a problem especially if your restore attempt freezes or you have to do it in stages. The software didn't point this out.
Anyway, thanks again. I was in desperate need of an answer and of course this was the first forum to come to mind :D
