I am the proud owner of a Fujifilm S2 Pro, presently I use a 1Gig Microdrive, which is more than adequate for weekend breaks, as long as I don't go crazy in RAW format.
My question is, does anyone know of a way of transferring, by use of the Firewire port, files from my S2 Pro to the iPod DIRECTLYtext?
Alternative suggestions are welcome, but as I now have a 20Gb iPod, I would prefer to to use it, I myself believe it to be a simple case of creating a software driver, what do you guys think? |

How do you intend on connecting the MicroDrive to the firewire port? Surely you'd need a firewire card reader, which certainly won't have the processing capabilities to talk to the iPod.
I guess using an iPod and card reader you'd have to write some firmware for the iPod itself.

| I understand your question- Firewire on the S2 to Firewire on the iPod with just a cable. There's likely more to it than just a driver. While some sort of driver might allow you to "mount" the Microdrive from the S2, you'd then need an interface to transfer or work with the files. A far easier solution would be to use the CompactFlash reader that's made specifically for the iPod. |

Yeah, it's slow, but you're not shooting to the iPod. It's still useful for clearing your memory card out in the field without the need for a laptop. Bear in mind that the Belkin note references most media types and brands and specific iPod firmware. High-performance cards (the Microdrive is about 30x) and newer firmware could greatly affect the speed.

why not get that mp3 player that has the 4gb micro drive built in that you can take out and use like a regular flash card. around 200 bucks

| Rumor has it that there will be a new iPod soon with a 50gig for about $500. The new iPod will have a 2" color screen so that you can view the images that are stored on it. |

I heard about that too. If true, the color screen might give Apple a reason to enable direct Firewire transfers as PaulMdx originally asked.

| Clarney, it would be awesome if there was a way to do that... at a studio at work we currently shoot from S2 Pro's straight to the computer through firewire, so it would be great if you could adapt the iPod to doing this. It would basically mean 20gb of memory on hand!! |

Hi all,
I don't know much about iPods, they're no very popular around here, but I heard about this a cople days ago. It seems to work with almost any digicam as uses the built-in USB connector to download pics to the iPod drive.
... my interest on the thing's raising ;)

Oh, I have one of those. I got it for my birthday and it's great. I shoot on 128 MB Sony Memory Sticks but I only have two. I can carry the iPod and Belkin Camera Link when I travel and not have to bring the laptop. I just plug the memory stick into the camera link and the iPod asks me if I just want to copy or if I want to copy and clear the memory stick. Very handy way to extend memory.
It is a little slow, but as it is now, I just use it at the end of the day. It also takes all kinds of media, so I used it to get stuff off a flash car I was loaning to a friend and I didn't have my camera around to plug in to see what they were. So I can see it being a great way to share photos with other folks who don't have the same media card readers. |

I use an I/O Magic Digital Photo Library. It has a 20gig hard drive and will take any memory card in the built in reader. Simple to use and not to bad on speed. Got mine at Radio Shack on sale for $129. Regular price of $179. Rechargeable battery built in. A great and not to pricey unit that works very well.

i looked @ the iPod as a portable storage device until i saw the transfer speed..
so i bought an Image Tank III instead - fantastic device :)
can find a review that i put together over on my site - its the first review that i've ever done.. i did it for the guys over on dpreview.com :)

I used this and love it. It is small and handy with 20GB storage and you can plug your compact flash directly to it for transfer of photos.
So I don't need notebook or a lot of memory card any more. as I don't have microdrive or a lot of memory cards.
I didn't need it for viewing the photos, so it's 16-gray scale preview is enough for me to see if I have the right files.
