Besides being a renowned actor, he was a spokesman for the National Rifle Association and once talked about prying his rifle "from his cold dead fingers." Guess it's time.

He was one of those actors that left there mark on the movie world.

A true classic film star and no one replace him.

He was Ben Hur.....

His wife is still alive, they married in 1944, and was with him when he passed away.....

A man who will be always be remembered..... RIP.....

We still have Clint Eastwood.

He (Heston) served in the Army Air Corps (predecessor to the U.S. Air Force) in WWII.

I liked him a lot better before he got involved with the NRA.

Ben Hur is one of my all time favorites

He played Moses in the Ten Commandments. A great movie and a great roll he played.

That is so sad, even sadder as I thought he died years ago.

RIP to probably my absolute favorite actor when I was growing up.
Ben Hur, Ten Commandments, the first 2 Planet of the Apes, Omega Man, Soylent Green - all some of my memorable fav's.

Why? I don't follow you. They were two great tough-guys of the same generation. Tough-guy film heros to American boys growing up in the 1970s. The first big tough guy loss, for me, was John Wayne.

In 1992, I met Charlton Heston in Pasadena, California and had dinner with him and a small group of media executives. He was representing SAG and I was there representing the SMPTE.

Even though I did not agree with some of his NRA views, he was a terrific person and a talented actor. He was very friendly and approachable to our group and shared many wonderful stories that night over dinner. Most labelled him as an extremest and ultra right wing. But, I would suggest that in the few hours that I spoke with him that he was open-minded and accepting of the opinions of others.

Our conversations were all related to feature film and television production and technology and we never discussed other issues, such as the NRA. In the topic of media, he was well informed, highly qualified and moderate.

So, in my opinion, he is a lost to us all from his many roles as an actor as well as for his activism. Regardless if you agreed with him or not, he took a stand supported by his beliefs and defend his right to freedom of speech.

He will be missed.

I'll miss him as a Great classic Actor of the 50's & 60's. However the otherside of him, his politics, not so much.

A decent cowboy - and a great toga actor, in the incomparable esteemed company of Kirk Douglas, Steve Reeves, Victor Mature & Woody Strode.

He kissed my hand and called me a stunning redhead.......... I forgave him for all his NRA views.

As other's have said, he made great movies, but his politics overshadowed those achievements. So, yes.

I'd been pleasantly surprised this AM with the lack of anti-gun nuts proudly crowing about Heston's death. Up until now. I'm sure after the weekend many of the other rights haters will pipe up. "Haters" is a young modern term I've never used before. It seemed very appropriate for this situation.

Let's please not turn this into a rant. Whether you agreed with his politics or not (for the record, I don't), he was also an amazing actor, a husband of nearly 65 years, and a father of two.

Before posting anything hateful, please consider whether you would want someone spitting on your parent's or spouse's virtual grave over a difference of political views.
