Isn't a true challenge..... we must reproduce exactly the same photo? Probably the title should be the title of the original challenge.

Reproduce it but make it look good. ie:) change lighting, angle, composition, focus, etc.

I think it's an excellent challenge!

Does anyone know if there is a way to browse the brown ribbon shots without manually opening each challenge archive?

Two suggestions in this thread over here.

Somewhat of a help but perhaps the site administrator can throw in a quick programming link to bring them all up. I don't do ones and zeros personally but I can't imagine that it's that difficult.

Only for this challenge the brown ribbon could go in home page together the true ribbons. The brown of the brown well deserve this :)

I'm not crazy about the challenge idea (not to brown all over your suggestion), but regardless here's a thread you might find useful:

"Ribbon Chase" in the DPC Cellar 2007

This presents interesting possibilities for me, since I live within a few miles, just down the road, from Whiterook. Unfortunately, I've been moving a housemate im all week and never even saw the challenge until now...

ETA: oh... it's an EXTRA challenge?

OMG! SC or somebody must be getting desperate. I think I suggested this challenge a while back, or at least thought it was a good idea. I guess I'd better enter then. Seems I remember a lot of people hated the idea at the time. Hmmmmmmmmmmmmm.
You guys are gonna be sorry if Whiterook enters this challenge. I've said for a long time that the proprietors of browns aren't really that far from the abilities that produce blues.

Wow, I totally missed the import of this thread. I thought this was a challenge suggestion -- I didn't realize it was happening!

Hi all. I'm still kinda' new here (joined last week), but I have a question. Is the challenge to just take a brown ribbon photo and make it technically better, or is the challenge to create the same shot that would have done better in its original challenge? The reason I am asking, is that it seems many of the brown ribbon winners were DNMC. Many of them were a single color, or something too blurred to discern. For example, if the photo was a nature shot and the challenge was sports, do we make a better nature shot in that same location or try to replicate the nature shot with a guy playing sports in it, for example. Lame example, but you get the gist of what I'm asking. Thanks!

I think it's pretty much up to you. Replicate whatever you think would have a fair chance at winning.

This was the original thread

link

The idea was to try to make this educational, try to understand what the person was aiming to achieve and 'do it properly'.

People have often had reasonable ideas - but perhaps been a little lacking in technique . .

It's certainly true that some just can't be saved - but to be honest I would just step over those : )

eta - this is actually very close to a Free Study as you can choose to go to any challenge of your choice and see what the brown was - including the actual Free Studies

also, is there a specific way to veryify a "brown ribbon" pickture? or do we just chose it according to what we think is either a good or bad picture

It has to have finished last (but not been DQ'd) in the challenge in which it was entered. It doesn't have to be a "bad" picture -- just to have gotten the lowest score.

You take your own version of that picture, but try and have it come out as a "good" picture which will win the Blue ribbon this time.

Paul, how about saying that in the challenge details? It seems many people don't know what "brown ribbon" means.

A 'Brown Ribbon' Picture is one that has come alst place in a challenge - not DQ'd - but last place.

No - you don't photoshop a picture, you look at one that came in last place, take the ideas and produce the 'same' shot, but one that's good enough to win a challenge. So choose a Brown Ribbon winner that you reckon has real potential.

I agree this would be a good idea. After all, some people don't hang out in the forums and don't dig the latest hepcat slang.

You dont have to meet the actual rules of the challenge that the grand prise looser came from right???

You need to follow the Advanced Editing ruleset that this challenge is running under, regardless of what the "Brown" you're trying to duplicate/improve ran under. Obviously, you don't need to use all of the Advanced rules if not needed.

If you're refering to any "special flags" from another challenge, those wouldn't apply in this case.

That's the way I'm interpreting in anyway. Good luck! :-)
