I have never seen so many amazing shots in a challenge. A lot of these shots are just perfect!

I think this will be one of the highest scoring challenges ever.

It's gonna have a hard time beating NAtional Geographic I'm afraid.

Ouch!!! Man, I didn't think my fire shot would start out this bad. It's a good shot and it's at a 4.44?!! Okay, so it's a little early in the voting to be complaining. But it did start out at a 6.5 for the first four votes, and then four votes later it's down to 4.44. Again, it's way too early to complain.

My shot is getting burned as well, might be too dark. Oh well, I'm pumped up for the next one.

Hmmmmmm!!!!!!!!

This was my first advanced editing Challenge and though the number of entries was "low" as usual the standard is very high.

But I had hoped mine would have had a better start. As mentioned above I wonder how many entries look too dark to some voters because of monitor calibration issues.

Heh ho, at least I am still Mr Average @ 36 votes - 5.5XXX though I did get to start at the lofty heights of 5.69XX. Also, interestingly no comments so far!

But as goinskiing says "too early to complain".

I will try to get down to my voting later in the week when work commitments allow.

:~)

PS Just been keeping an eye on the voting and seen that I have just received a 2 with no comment added. I do hope that person comes back and lets me know why they thought only a 2 was appropriate.

Okay, now I feel like it's time to complain a little. Now I know my shot was too artistic, because it's not a photo by any means, but it is sitting at a 3.9!! This was one of the few I actually felt good about. Like I have said on several other threads, it's really a hit-or-miss when it comes to voting on DPC. It's just that this challenge (and the last) were a HUGE miss. Oh well, you win some , and you lose some (the latter more than others). Okay, I feel a little better now. Will just have to do better on Engineering and Free sTudy (which I am STOKED about).

Yeah, mine isn't doing nearly as well as *I* think it should either. Oh well. I had a unique idea (I thought, although there is one other that is similar) but I'm coming to the conclusion that even if I do better (in my own sight) that doesn't necessarily mean it will do better in the eyes of the voter. I'm thoroughly convinced that the site is helping me to become a better photographer, though.

Most of us haven't even been awake long enough to see them, let alone vote. Give the week a chance :)

Just got done voting and it's been quite a long time since I've given out so many 4's and 5's ;( Some of the shots are very nice but others really leave me wanting. And yes, my monitor is calibrated so it's not an issue of darkness or too light.

Glad I didn't enter my shot, know it would have gotten killed

I don't need a week to know that mine's not going to do much better than the average here. After these many votes you can tell:

Votes: 46
Avg Vote: 5.6957
Comments: 1

On the upside, it's better than my average score. :0)

Weak challenge, in my view; technically very poor in the main, and very little that's even made me stop and look for very long so far.

I thought some were very well executed. There were some that I know from my own experience are difficult shots to capture well, and the graininess of the image hurts them. But, still, I think there are a number of very attractive and eye-catching images.

I second this entirely.

I've been scoring these shots pretty low myself. Haven't given anything over a 7 (and only a couple of those). Lots of noisy pictures and no great amount of creativity. Also tons of photos that weren't even fire.

Well, I just finished voting and will go back and make comments throughout the week as I have time. I gave out the following:

9 - 1
8 - 2
7 - 18
6 - 23
5 - 34
4 - 23
3 - 1

Granted, I tend to score a little on the high side, but really, now, while there weren't as many that bowled me over as there were in say the NG challenge, I don't think they were that bad.

Frankly, I'd have given my own at LEAST a 7, but it's being cremated right now with a score of just over 5.

To be honest, I didn't think the majority of the fire shots were all that special, but it is a tricky subject as you can't keep much control over it.
03/01/2004 10:35:05 AM · #17
I think there are many good shots.
But there is few of them that realy point out.
Well, let the best fire wins! :)

I'm sorry I can't vote :( but...soon :)

Good luck all!

It would be cool if the system automatically compiled voting patterns (histograms) like this! I would like to quickly see how I voted on a given challenge, and across all challenges. Then the question would be whether or not this should be freely displayed to anyone in the profile stat? At least at a challenge level, it would be cool to see the histogram of average voting patterns.

I can't vote, but looked for looking's sake, and felt the same as you.

Boy was I fooled. I thought that the "eyes" shot was yours.

Though I entered I have yet to vote and as I will be away on business for the next 2 days it will not be until the end of the week before I can cast my votes as appropriate.

If the overall quality is as poor as some of the other posters to this thread suggest then as as oft been asked hopefully some comments will be forthcoming, as my score continues to tumble but without any comments after 59 votes.

Perhaps this will one of those Challenges that has Ribbons with lower averages than I expected to see.

:~)

I agree only a a few shots caught my eye, I guess mine sadly wasn't an eye catcher either : (
a bit too arty, i need to learn to take things more literally if I want to do well in this comp.
oh well I can still fight back from a 4.9...
...maybe

I am learning that there a lot of things you can substitute for a candle and have a similarly boring shot.

I'm not as predictable as I thought! *insert evil laughter* okay, maybe I'm a TAD predictable. I know you won't be able to guess my entry for 'silence' once the voting commences! *insert MORE evil laughter*

My entry is sitting at 5.2732 right now. Makes me think that my outtake would probably do better. I can't post it for opinion..., don't want to influence other entries of the same type.... Hoping that votes pick up towards the end of the week, (usually does).
