My plan is to go to Staples tomorrow and purchase PhotoShop CS 3. I have been using PS6 for years and think it's time to buy a new version. Is there anything I should know before I write the check for $649? I'm thinking this is a no brainer and I should have done this several years ago. X

I'm not sure about the version you have but most the time if you have a registered version of PS you can upgrade to the new PS for much cheaper than buying it new.

ETA:

Here is a Link to Adobe for a promotion they are running on buying CS3 and Lightroom together. It looks like your version of PS is not eligable for an upgrade price of $199.

Lets just say I did not buy the last version and it's time I did. PS6 was the last version you could make copies and put on as many machines as you wanted to. After this version I hear the security became much more resistant to copying without paying for it.

Might as well, that way you aren't using pirated software anymore and then the next upgrade you will get at the discount. Looks like the promotion is pretty good, for an additional $175 you can get lightroom and some other plugin, might want to check that out.

They must have some better deal than the $649 full price CD. I know I just recently got an email for an offer of a $299 upgrade because I am a PS Elements user (I have PSE 1!). The only caveat is that it's online only.

You should know the recommended system specs and make sure your home PC can handle it.

You mite also want to call Adobe to see if youre PS6 qualifies for an UG as it will prob save you money in the long run...

As for security you can auth it on 2 machines, I have mine on my laptop and desktop puters...

The upgrade to CS3 goes back only to 7.0, I believe, so no joy there. It is possible, however, to buy a full, unregistered copy of an earlier version, and then upgrade to CS3. That's the way I originally bought PS. I bought a copy of 4.0 on fleabay, and upgraded to 7.0... and eventually to CS, then CS2, and finally CS3 :-P

I think my total outlay for 4.0 + the 7.0 upgrade was about $200 USD, but that was years ago.

If you choose to take a path like this:
- Make *sure* of what is the earliest version which can be directly upgraded to CS3
- Make *sure* that the old version you are buying is unregistered, unopened and a full version
This path is not without risk.
