I've used a firewire card reader for a number of years. They are pretty fast in downloading your files off of the CF card. I also use a USB 2.0 6 in 1 card reader because my 1DMKII has a SD card. The USB 2.0 (not to be confused with the older 1.0 USB port) is also fast.

I've always used a card reader and don't bother with the camera to USB port cable.

I download to my hard drive. I then open them in BreezeBrowser and view them with that.

I rarely view files while on the card. I much prefer to bring them onto the computer's HD and then to an external drive before I do much of anything.

Doing too much on-card before the transfer just kinda makes me nervous.

I also use a USB 2.0 multi card reader.

Although the FireWire and USB 2.0 Hi-speed specs are similar, my experience has been that the FireWire readers are much faster in practice. they are fast enough that your cards will probably be the limiting factor in speed. I get about 13MB/s with a Lexar RW019 FireWire reader and Sandisk Extreme III cards, so about 1 5D RAW file per second.

Firewire is faster, no doubt about it. I also have usb 2.0 and firewire and I did quite a few "tests" to see which was faster. But for smaller cards, 512 and under, its not THAT much faster.

Thing is, the usb is built into my box, its alway there, always ready. The firewire is an outboard, and usually sat on top of the box. One day, about a year and half ago, it fell off and got lost somewhere in the tangle of cables beneath my computer. Been using usb 2.0 every since and havn't worried too much about it.

My experience with Firewire related here.

Firewire can = :-)

USB is rated for 480mbits/s which is 60 MB/s. Reality is your not gonna get any faster then 30 MB/s.

Several things affect speed The card, The reader, the USB Controller, the speed at which the hard drive can write data. In my experience I get anywwhere from 3.5 to 20 MB/s. On SD cards 3.5 mbps is about average while usb hard drives transfer around 15 mb/s. Seen alot better with firewire but from what i have read the faster compact flash cards do even better due to their read write speeds being faster then SD cards.
