Post your October Walkabout Pictures here!

Looking for extraordinary photos in ordinary places. Walking in familiar places with your eyes wide open, taking time to look. Complete details on the challenge here.

Here’s the place to post your pictures.

A few reminders:

1. Pictures must be taken between 12:00 a.m. and 11:59 p.m. (local time) on either Saturday, October 20 or Sunday, October 21

2. Post up to five images here. All images should be uploaded in a single post.

3. Try to include a little narrative in your post, telling us how/why you chose your starting spot, where you went, what you did, and how or why you found the images you did.

4. Please try to comment on as many images you can during the coming week (Oct. 22-26). Commenting on this challenge is as much fun as participating.

October’s Optional Rule (Ignore it, follow it, or make up your own!)
Zoom with your feet instead of your lens. Pick a focal length and try to take as many of your pictures as you can with it.

Treasure Hunt (Optional)
Include your foot in one of your pictures.
(thanks again to shalrath for the suggestion!)

Have fun, and thanks for playing!

Well get to post first ;) Its quite late here on the night of the 20th I'm half asleep so I hope it all makes sense!

I asked my youngest Nimue if she would like to come for a walk with me. I needed to post some letters, return DVD's, go to supermarket to grab some stuff for lunch and go to Bunnings our local hrdware store for vegetable sseedlings. Quite an outing so thought I would kill 2 birds with 1 stone and also use it as my walk for this challenge. I might add the whole time it was very windy!

First we walked about 8 houses from our house to the end of the street around the corner is 3 churches in a row

Then we carried on down to the shops at one point we had to stop to sit on a bench coz it was soo windy here's Nimue looking particualrly fetching in the wind

As it was windy and quite cold when we got to the shops there was hardly anyone there. They looked even more nasty than they normally do. I live in a very low socio economic area.

After doing a couple of our jobs we walked around the corner to the other side of the shops

We then went to Bunnings our local hardware store as it was a holiday weekend ( Labour weekend ) they had treats in store for the kids ;)

These are quite different from my last wlakabout photos! Plus I really wanted to try the extras as a way to make me learn new stuff but that did'nt really happen at all!

These two are my favorites. Nimue is adorable! And I like the interesting texture on the shops photo. Sounds like a fun family walk.

Woke up too early this morning after a restless night...so I decided to walk to my deli for a cup of coffee. Lo and behold...it was TOO early! So I continued to walk in a direction I had never walked before. I stopped along the way to admire the beautiful fall colors and clicked away. Getting up close to red berries, spider webs, golden and crimson leaves, interesting mailboxes, flowers trying to hold on to life as the cold and wet descends upon them.
Dismal and cold this morning...no coffee yet...and in uncharted territory...I totally forgot about getting a shot of my foot.
Then I came upon this truck

and I thought of NikonJeb. Not quite the panache of Jeb's truck shots but hey...I've never taken a picture of a truck before.
Then I came upon this pine tree...by this time my hands were shaking from the cold (I forgot to wear gloves)

and I wouldn't have taken a picture of my feet at this point because I wore floppies and my toes were turning a lovely shade of blue.
Noticed this mailbox

Around the next corner and across the street I saw a huge bush of morning glories. Jaywalked across 4 lanes of traffic (luckily not many cars were out)and there was a hummingbird flitting around gathering it's breakfast. With hopes dashed of catching him in flight, I waited patiently for him to rest on a branch. Ahhh...finally! Go to take the shot...and my camera had shut off! Quickly turning it back on (which is not quick by most camera standards) I focused in on the branch...and he had flown away :(
There were 4 huge garden tarantula webs but their creators were no where to be seen. Probably staying inside their nests like smart spiders do (unlike photographers)when it's cold out.
So.......I settled for some morning glory shots. The sun was just starting to poke through the clouds.

In the distance (I had walked a huge circle so I could end up back where I started)...I noticed the "OPEN" sign lit up on the deli and had to make a critical decision! Coffee or more pictures...Coffee or more pictures...Coffee or more pictures.
It was then that I noticed the huge water droplets dangling from a tiny little bud. Remembering some amazing images here at DPC of reflections in water drops adine...I took a lot of shots from many different angles.
Then the need for coffee overtook me! Coffee in hand and lots of images on my SD card...I finished my walk and arrived home. Sat down at my computer and loaded the images. As usual...most of them were out of focus and I was hard pressed to find 5 images.
And then...........................................
This image popped up on screen! Not as good as the reflection shots of others...BUT...I FINALLY DID IT!!!!

This pine cone is great. Try it in B&W!
That last one amazing! Every time I try it, I am always out of focus.

Got up early and decided to walk downtown. Went by the rail yards and took a couple of pictures, then past the post office. Took a couple of plant pictures. Notice how I haven't posted anything yet! Then I came to the old flat iron cafe. Now it's a photo studio and it had
painted on the back. That's the jail in the background. Naughty boys. And that sorta formed the theme for the walk.
Next, I walked by the courthouse.
I was getting hungry as I walked by the Mexican Village but I couldn't stop because it wasn't open yet! Right next door was this office. . Grabbed some breakfast, but not there! And as I was heading home, because my card was full as well as my belly, I deleted a picture to get this texture to share with everyone. When I got home and downloaded my card, I finally figured out why it was full. I had some tiffs on it that I had printed last week.

My wife Carol and I took our puppy Caly out for a long walk on a very nice and warm weekend morning. We left the boys and home so we could talk about how our eldest son's first dance at school went. Carol had chaperoned for the dance at the middle school and we didn't want little ears listening as we laughed about the events... We headed out straight from our house at about 9am and decided to complete a 3 to 4 mile loop. My legs were feeling pretty good so we thought we should take advantage of it!

Carol and Caly

The overcast sky really didn't provide any good skies, but the colors were pretty vibrant with the diffuse light. The roads around our house are all curvy and twisted and make for some nice scenes.

After heading around a large circle of roads, we headed back up the hill to our house. One of the roads had just been paved and the blacktop was such a nice contrast to the leaves that had fallen overnight.

The weather has been so warm this fall that the flowers are still going pretty strong. We spotted at about the 3 mile mark (heading back home)

The colors are at absolute peak right now here. I ended up stopping every 50 feet or so to get the next most vibrant and spectacular set of leaves.

We made it home after about an hour. A nice and quiet and relaxing time. Caly got to bark at her friends in the neighborhood, Carol and I got to laugh about how our oldest is starting to grow up, and we got a chance to enjoy the spectacle of fall in New England.

There are a few more in my walkabout are if you are interested...bassbone walkabouts

These are great! Keep em coming. I didn't make it out today, day got away from me, but I'll be out there tomorrow to join you all. Looking forward to commenting on these as well in the coming week. Some really cool images popping up, and we're just getting started.

I went out and took a total of ten photos (in this type of challenge, I try to take as few photos as possible). These are five consecutive shots, from 7.20.08 a.m. to 7.27.33 a.m. ;-Þ Mostly really basic editing except the last one. I used my 50mm lens for a change.
The one with the feet (third try was acceptable...)
Interesting shapes.
The only cropped image.
The perils of walkabouts - dogs barking at you.
Morning sunshine, beautiful day, but no chance for a drive to the mountains...

Then I took a couple of unsuccessful shots a children's slide, and finally a bonsai tree loaded with berries.

I did my walk early this morning but have been fumbling around with PP. Somce of the images are infrared and I am having a heck of a time with processing.

Anyway, I started out going out my back slider and the side gate onto Kinkaid. Up the hill toward a park-like area which used to be houses along Dry Creek, but the city tore them down because of the creek flooding.

It's a nice open area now ...
(with my Tokina 10-17)

The bridge over Dry Creek...
Infrared with Sigma 18-200 OS

The view of the creek from the bridge - not much to see until it rains!
(with my Tokina 10-17)

(Obligatory) Fall colors on a tree in the field...
Hey, this is normally brown Kansas. If I can find color, I take it! LOL

Coming back to my street...
Infrared with the Tokina - note how you can see through the edge of Geo Washington onto the Kinkaid sign - spooky!

The End

I've been taking so many daytime nature shots lately that I am tired of looking at them lol

So for this walkabout, I have a THEME... Halloween Night Shots! Whoo!

We took the neighborhood kids and the beagles for a walk tonight. We decided to go check out some houses that really go all out in decorating for Halloween.

We cut thru the school yard...

So we could get to this house...

And this guy was hanging out front...

Happy Halloween!

October has been a dark and rainy month. While the rest of the US has been frighteningly dry, we have rain. Today might be the 3rd rain free day this month. Good timing.

I only brought the Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II. I got it in September but haven't been shooting much. First time I really thought about it. I think the first SLR I shot with (Dad's circa 1976) had a 50mm lens. It was like old home week for me.

On the way to the bus this morning I saw some hosta plants against a brick wall

Lovely wet yellow maple maple leaves on river rock in front of a pawn shop.

Blue sky in a puddle lined with yellow (aspen?)leaves and soggy newspaper.

Got to work at 9:00 am and it was already starting to cloud up.

When I left at 5:15 the sky was magic dark and ominous, so I finally got a shot of the YWCA parking ramp across the street from work. Orange iron work and raw concrete. From the bomb shelter school of architecture. (This building has more windows than that actually)

Tomorrow it is expected to rain all day again.

Ok so i started my walk a bit on the early side [thumb]602855[/thumb]
this is from the front of my old high school planned to walk thru town early for the good light [thumb]602852[/thumb] but just before the sun came up wile i was happily clicking away ---no more click? dead battery---bummer had to go home and charge the battery--so i finished my walk at home instead of by my old school found this shot [thumb]602853[/thumb] just down the street and found some flowers not too much farther [thumb]602851[/thumb],[thumb]602854[/thumb] there wasn't a lot that i found after that except for some tried and failed macro shots

We set off on the walkabout at about 9:30am.

The first photo is of the local stables:

In Sunningdale we spotted the 2002 Queen's Jubilee Clock:

Moving on past the clock, it was time for coffee at Fego's:

We headed towards the return route, down a wooded path and came upon a gap in the hedge, next subject was busy eating.

Last port of call ws the local church:

Then it was time to go home for lunch.

Okay, so motherlee beat me to it this time:)

We decided to head in the opposite direction to the last Walkabout which was to Sunninghill village. This time, we headed for Sunningdale, about a mile from home. Being a Saturday, we knew we would have to stop off for coffee. So, the first visit was to the ATM for some cash, this happens to be next door to this car showroom:

Armed with some cash, we made our way into the village and I spotted this Pub, and of course, Saturday was the day of the Rugby World Cup between England and South Africa, which would explain the decorations:

Coffee was taken in Fego's, along with scrambled egg on toast and Cumberland sausages. Suitably refreshed, I took this photo of a roof vent:

We turned off the road down a narrow tree lined footpath:

Passing some horses in the fields, we met up with another lane that passed the village church and on to the village school, where they had designed a mosaic and mounted it on the wall of the new school building.

From here, it was back home. We had been really lucky again this time as it was a glorious sunny day. A great day out again!!

I decided on a sunset walk last night as opposed to the sunrise walk last time. Just wanted to see if the town looked any different. I started out by walking down to the main drag and walking along the storefronts. These were all taken with my Nikon Micro 60mm f2.8D. This window was decked out for Halloween.

This next one made me sad. This is my favorite bookstore, and I had no idea it was closing. Apparently the building is being razed for a newer one, and the bookstore must find a new location which, so far, they have been unable to accomplish,so...
I wiped my eyes and continued on my walk until I stumbled upon this lovely cactus that was glowing in the last rays of the day.and I felt much better.
Starting my return home I found an old car that was hiding in the bushes that had some great colors.I ran when the dogs started barking.

I always feel weird taking shots of people's homes (especially when they're home), but I couldn't pass on this one. Finishing the way I started with a picture of the season.

No feet were included because the one shot I took was bad, bad, bad. I just couldn't do it. Maybe next time.

So here are my five from my walkabout this morning. Started around 10:30 am on Sunday and ended about an hour later. The route I decided to walk was a route that I take almost daily from my house to the grocery store and back. The round trip is just about a mile long.

After a few blocks I came across this ladder leaning against a fence.

Around the corner there is a Sonic Restaurant. I really liked the rhythm of the signs.

As I was crossing the street I came across this little reflector in the middle of the street.

This was not one of my favorite photos, but my wife really liked it.

Finally As I was walking back to my house I found this nice little collection of pumpkins in front of a house.

Ended up taking about 200 photos most of which I was not that excited about, but it was hard to pick 5. Here is my gallery of the 12 that I like the most, including these 5.

I didn't sign up, but I did get out. The family stopped at a yard sale/flee market this morning. We stop here about once a month, so it is sort of familiar territory. Acutally my wife stopped at the flee marked, may daughter read in the car, and went out to get some pictures. So I headed away form the flee market.

The first image was where they had marked "Gas" on the old railroad tracks. I'm not sure why they thought they had to go that far. Perhaps they thought is someone tore up the tracts they should know that there was a gas line below.

The assignment said get an image of your feet. Well I got one foot as I rested it on the purple fire hydrant.

Then I moved over to a small maple tree nearby and played around a bit getting images of some of the colorfull leaves. For this one I had to hold the camera above my head and take a chance on what I got. It took a few tries but one came out.

Next I moved down the tracks aways to get an image of the old railroad cars on a siding. They are covered with graffiti.

And then finally on the way back I started looking at the railroad ties as I walked along the tracks. This one stood out for me.

It was a good trip. I picked up a few more image that I will post over at my photoblog. I did get my letter W for the accidental letters project which I am far behind on finishing up.

It was a fun time, and I'm ready to do it again next month.

Started my Walkabout from my house on a breezy, warm Arizona day. Almost immediately I'm reminded of the gloomy housing market with 3 houses in a row for sale. It's been at least 6 months for each.

I head out on a nearby trail and run into my first of many saguaros.

I eventually come across this temporary housing location for these saguaros. They'll be moved into neighborhoods once this area is built up.

Another giant saguaro I crossed paths with. Too bad they're not blooming now.

This is what's left of a dead saguaro. I thought the lines and shadows were pretty interesting.

Although I didn't intend for this to be a cactus-themed walk.. I'm pleased with the results.

I was unwell this weekend and didn't get out on a full walk - I hope you don't mind, but I opted to enter a few shots anyway, after taking a "walk" around my backyard. Only got two items of interest, and I offer up a texture to boot, for anyone who wants to use it:
