I noticed where KaDi mentioned the Critique Club in another thread so I thought I'd take a peek.

That forum is pretty much toast! Doesn't look like anything has been going on for 3 or 4 months?

Has the Critique Club been disolved? If so, should the "I would like an indepth critique on my submission." checkbox just go away so people that select it won't be left wondering?

The forums have never been just a buzz of activity.

However, there have not been any critiques in two weeks.

That is sad. I shall do my part to remedy that right now.

Been pretty busy. Will try and make more critiques as well.

It would be good to see a review of the Critique Club.

can you elaborate? exactly what do you mean?

And then, glad2badad there's always attrition and weariness among the members of the volunteer Critique Club.

You've got lots of Challenges under your belt, and a respectable average, perhaps you could come aboard and help with the critiques. Just ask Karmat or, I think, Muckpond, how to go about it. Your help would be appreciated along with the help of anyone else who would like to volunteer.

Okay - I've made a critique. Must admit I've been pretty slack with all things DPC recents - working too hard.

duh. reading again, I *think* I know what you are saying.

Either:

1. It would be good to do a review of the CC to see if it is needed/helpful/purposeful/working

2. It would be good to see a review by a CC member on some of the shots.

#1 - mostly. Sorry I should have been clearer. I'd like to see it become active (again?), perhaps a little more flexibility, maybe more required from those requesting it (old debate), etc. Just a review of what it is, how it helps those who seek to use it now, what role it can play in the site (including site 'activity', community involvement, attention, etc). Maybe even a special page showing recent critiques (for those who wish to learn)?

Just a general 'review' of the Critique Club and how it is managed.

It would be nice if those images that score less than 6 or even 5.5 were given preference when images are assigned. I've been assigned a couple of ribbon winners in the past.

I first became a dpchallenge member in 2006 and due to family reasons, I had to put photography aside for a while to take care of my mother but I recently renewed my membership and am at it again.

In the past, I really appreciated the site because it allowed me to learn from my mistakes thru the comments left by voters and the dp critique club. Since I have come back, it seems that I am getting neither benefit. I bought a new camera, entered a few challenges and requested a critique on all three entries starting about 10-09-07 I believe.

As of yet, I have not received any critiques and just about the only comments that I get from voters are "nice picture" and such. Don't get me wrong, I appreciate the compliment, but my average votes are among the worst that I did before and I don't know what I'm doing wrong. I know that I have alot to learn and I expected that this site would help me learn but I am getting no feed back at all.

In the past, I know that I learned on several occasions what I was doing wrong. I plan to take a photography course at my local college in the spring but I am almost ready to pack up the camera until then. Any other suggestions.

Hello Again, Friends!

If I may be of assistance, the offer still holds. Early on I offered to help, but my skill was very limited.

Even today, I still wonder if I will become the excellent photographer I want to be and is on display with the DPC front-runners, but I know I improve slowly. So, I keep swinging. I understand a much higher level of photography than I can produce as yet.

Thanks for your consideration! :)

In the past, I have found that I learn far more from making comments and writing critiques than I do from receiving them. What I have found is that commenting and critiquing has helped me to develop my own critical eye. I then find that I am mentally critiquing my own photographs before I take them, forcing me to pay more attention to what I am doing, and to take the time to get the shot right, ultimately resulting in a much better final project.

A couple suggestions that might help you to really prepare for that class this spring:

1. Join the Critique Club (if you're not already a member) and commit to write at least 5 critiques per week (one per weekday).

2. For the next month, pick one challenge each week and comment on 100% of the entries in those challenges.

If you try those, I think you'll learn quite a lot, and will notice the improvement in your photography over time.

I like that first part, but I'd like to ask your reasoning and ask if you do this 100% thing very often.......it seems like a daunting task!

I have tried on occasion to comment on 100 entries, much less than 100% usually, in a challenge and I get so burned out doing that I just want to shoot myself.

100% in a challenge per week? Kill me now! LOL!!!

You'd have to comment only on the weird challenges that don't have many entries, and sometimes those ones are the most difficult ones to critique/comment/vote upon.

How much time do you devote to this to even be able to do that?

I could probably handle the Critique Club part of it, but I'm hardly qualified, though I could probably help some if I was given sub-6 entries to critique.

I have noticed even by just voting that my eye for meeting the challenge and what makes a pleasing shot is becoming more discerning.

I'm thinking that's the reasoning behind the 20% feature and that's a terrific idea IMO.
