Is it supposed to be ONE pencil only?
10/10/2007 12:36:53 AM · #2
It would seem that it would be a pencil masquerading as NOT a pencil.
10/10/2007 02:25:04 AM · #3
Gimme a break ... make sure there's at least one pencil in the photo which seems to be doing something other than "fulfilling the role of a pencil" -- presumably either writing or erasing something.

Anything else you include in the photo should be entirely up to you, the photographer -- if your other props happen to include other pencils, so be it; it seems NBD to me.

It seems to me that if it was meant to specify that you can use exactly one and only one pencil, it would have said "include exactly one pencil ..." in the Challenge description. Logically, in this type of situation, "include a ..." is the same as "Include one or more ..."

Challenges are not intended to be solely interpreted as photojournalism assignments or catalog shots -- though you are free to shoot in those styles if you choose -- but also as a source of inspiration for people to create art containing a subject they hadn't previously considered, and to try and convey any revelations they've experienced to you, the viewer.

Actually, logically, it's not the same.

But it doesn't really matter because the winning image will be of a 160 ton Sperm Whale and the pencil will be floating nearby and appear to be seaweed. 14 people will rate it a 4 because they don't see the pencil. 5 people will rate it between 2 to 3 because they didn't see it either. And one person will rate it a 1 and get mad about it after the challenge is over and start 3 different threads about it, of which 2 will be locked.

I dont think it was the crazy of a question, who knows, maybe it was.

For me there would be a difference in how I would tackle this depending on if i was restricted to a sole pencil or if i could include group of pencils together

What a stupid challenge...

Now what can I make a pencil do?

:- )

The only thing you forgot was the people raving about it being really 'Out of the box' and misunderstood . . and why is everyone so literal . . lol

You just want to be glad I'm not literal as well or I would point out that Sperm whale only grow to 40-50 tons :- )

AHA... but you see that is EXACTLY what would make it a winner... the fact that it is 4 to 5 times bigger than what it normally should be.

I understand how scissors can beat paper, and I get how rock can beat scissors, but there's no f**king way paper can beat rock. Is paper supposed to magically wrap around rock and leave it immobile? Why the hell can't paper do this to scissors? Screw scissors, why can't paper do this with people? Why aren't sheets of college ruled notebook paper constantly suffocating students as they take notes in class? I'll tell you why, because paper can't beat anybody. When I play rock paper scissors, I always choose rock. Then when somebody claims to have beaten me with their paper I can punch them in the face with my already clenched fist and say, oh shit, I'm sorry, I thought paper would protect you, you a**hole!

See, photos like this I don't get. While yes, it's got great contrast and it's technically well done, it has no interest for me. It's just two pencils and a wooden board. There's a pretty cool optical illusion of the shadow making it look like a triagle brace, but....I would rate this a 7. I don't understand why photos like this win ribbons.

This is not to offend anyone - please don't take it as ridicule. It just doesn't hold my interest.

I always look for creativity in my photos. I guess I like to think of a shot and go do it rather than looking around for it. This would get a 10 from me.

But that's just me.

But then wouldn't the sperm whale be the main subject?? The challenge very clearly states that the pencil must be the main subject ;)

hehe
*honest officer, I am not trying to start trouble* :D

I guess I'm more photo journalistic in nature. I rather capture the beauty around me. I'll stare at an Ansel Adams landscape for hours and find something I didn't see before. Don't get me wrong, there are photos here that are absolutely ingenious, that are created in the home with nothing more then objects and imagination.

Examples:

But photos like the one you just presented, will forever be a board and 2 pencils.

I much rather look at and try to capture this:

True, your example is more beautiful. But I feel better making the photo than just capturing it.

It really is about just taking a photo and provoking thought, I think. I prefer doing the latter.

I 'll just shut up now because we 've hijacked the thread.
