What is PROJECT?

PROJECT - engaging artists in the built environment is a new national funding scheme jointly supported by the Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment (CABE) and Arts & Business (A&B). It will involve the arts, culture, design, education, environment, health care, housing, and regeneration sectors in England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales. Public Art South West will manage and deliver the scheme which was launched on 8 June 2004 and will run until March 2006.

PROJECT aims to create a shared vision for public space, planning and high quality urban design; and engage artists, public agencies and the private sector in projects that will have a positive impact on the places in which we live.

Engaging with artists and arts organizations to develop quality environments, increased environmental sustainability, more effective community interaction and expanded opportunities for economic development is now recognized as key to business as well as public sector success.

This funding partnership between CABE and A&B has secured a new award scheme for the arts. We want people undertaking any built environment project to ask: what is the added value of involving an artist and to look at the contributions of artists to the built environment as a whole.

This scheme aims to promote the role that artists can play in sharing creative ideas within multidisciplinary practice. Through changing the way we think and work with architecture, building and design professionals, we aim to create imaginative environments that are fit for purpose, and that reflect local identity and meet communities' needs.

Artists submissions

The May Gallery

Exhibitions in the May Gallery normally last from 4-6 weeks (depending on the academic calendar). Proposals are accepted year-round, and normally are considered for the academic year following their submission. The May Gallery is dedicated to showing a wide range of photographic work, so successful proposals relate to some photographic process.

Exhibition proposals may be made by an individual or a group, but should make appropriate use of the gallery space. The gallery has almost 160 running feet of wall space, although it is divided into ten distinct sections. A schematic drawing of the space can be helpful for planning. Exhibitions that will not substantially fill the gallery are not considered.

Proposals must include:
Name(s) of photographer(s).
All contact information.
Résumé(s), including information about any prior exhibitions of the work proposed.
A brief statement about the work, both in terms of content and process (for the consideration of the Gallery Committee; if the proposal is accepted, this statement will not necessarily be for public use).
12-20 35mm slides of the work proposed for exhibition, in a plastic page, clearly marked with name, title (if any) and an orientation mark for proper viewing. Do not send original transparencies. While slides will be returned, and care will be taken with them, the Gallery cannot accept responsibility for handling originals.
Image sizes, and outer dimensions of the work proposed. (Cover glass is normally provided by the Gallery, but framed work can be accepted by prior arrangement.) Proposals should be sent to:

May Gallery Review Committee
School of Communications
Webster University
470 East Lockwood Ave.
St. Louis MO 63119-3194

//www.webster.edu/maygallery/proposal.htm

Receipt of proposals will be acknowledged, and materials will be returned after consideration. Proposals are reviewed in January and August for the coming academic year, unless a sufficient number of pending proposals warrants convening a review committee at other times.

The Irving Sandler Artists File

The Irving Sandler Artists File is a digitized image database and slide registry that is open to the public free-of-charge, and it is one of the largest and most comprehensive artist registries in the country.

The Artists File is not curated and there is no fee to join or view the Artists File. Up to this point the Artists File has only been available for visitors to Artists Space, but our in-house database is now accessible through the internet.

Each artist has two images of their work included in this database and it is searchable by such categories as "medium", "materials", "style", and artists' names.

Artists' email information and/or web site links are available for visitors to contact the artists personally. If you find an artist who does not have any email or website information, or their email address doesn't work, please email the Artists File for their information at artfile@artistsspace.org.

Artists featured in this database each have an in-house file at Artists Space with more images and biographical information. For more in-depth research or to view more work by the artists in the database, please make an appointment to visit the Artists File.

The file is open on Fridays and Saturdays from 10am to 6pm; for an appointment contact Artists File Coordinator Letha Wilson at 212.226.3970 ext. 35.

Although there is no fee to use the Artists File, we ask institutions and corporations undertaking research to consider a donation to Artists Space.

Artists File Online Artists: If you are an artist who has work in the Artists File Online and there is an error on your page, or your information has changed, please email Letha at artfile@artistsspace.org.

Please email the specific information about the problem and it will be fixed as soon as possible.

Artists submissions

The San Jose Institute of Contemporary Art

The San Jose Institute of Contemporary Art is accepting submissions of sculpture by San Francisco Bay Area artists, which will be installed in the ICA's Rear Window. The ICA is specifically seeking sculpture that activates the space, such as kinetic sculpture or dramatically lit forms. The Rear Window is part of Night Moves, a series of window illuminations visible only from dusk to dawn. The window dimensions are approximately 11 feet long by 12 feet high by 5 feet deep. The Rear Window is an ongoing exhibition series; there is no submissions deadline.

Please submit a current résumé, artist statement, and visual documentation of your work (5 to 20 images is standard). You may also submit photographs, VHS videotape, CD-ROMs, DVDs or Web addresses, but slides are preferred. Be sure to label your visual materials with your name and telephone number as well as the artwork's title, date, media and dimensions. Do not submit original artwork. Please include a self-addressed, stamped envelope for the return of your submission materials.

Send your materials to:
Rear Window Night Moves
SJICA
451 South First Street
San Jose, CA 95113

If you have questions, please contact info@sjica.org.

The San Jose Institute of Contemporary Art is a non-profit art gallery with the mission of exhibiting forward-looking, thought-provoking, and exciting contemporary art by emerging and established Bay Area artists.

How is art chosen for exhibition at the ICA?
Art exhibitions at the ICA are chosen and organized by a Curatorial Committee, made up of ICA Board members and the Executive Director. This group selects art, presents exhibition ideas, and determines the exhibition schedule. The Curatorial Committee meets and reviews submissions every three to six months.

How do I get my artwork into a show at the ICA?
There are two ways to get your artwork shown at the ICA:

1. If you are interested in a solo or group exhibition, please submit a resume, statement and slides to: Curatorial Committee, SJICA, 451 South First Street, San Jose, CA 95113. You may also submit VHS videotape, photographs, CD ROMS, DVDs, or Web addresses, but slides are preferred. Do not submit original artwork. Be sure to label the submission with your name and phone number, along with the artwork's title, medium, and date. Please include a self-addressed, stamped envelope if you would like your submission materials returned. You will receive a response in approximately six months.

2. The ICA holds two benefit events each year, the Fall Auction and Monotype Marathon. Artists who donate work to the Fall Auction find this is a great way to get their work seen and build a following of collectors. Artists can also receive 20% of the auction sale price. The Monotype Marathon is a weekend of intensive monoprint workshops, in which artists are sponsored to make prints-the best print by each artist appears in a show at the ICA.

How do I get my work in the Store@ICA?
Artists that have work in our store receive 60% of the retail price. If you are interested in selling your artwork in our store, please leave a message for Jillian Waldo at 408.283.8155.

How do I get on the mailing list?
You can receive email announcements by submitting your email address to info@sjica.org
or become a member and receive our newsletter.

ePhotoZine competition: Registration required

Competition Details

What's in your head? A vivid imagination, or run of the mill images in black and white? Well, no matter how technicolour your thought processes, they will pale into insignificance compared to the dazzling A2 prints produced by the twin-head, professional quality, Canon imagePROGRAF 5000 large format printer, supplied in conjunction with our friends at Revolution Transfers. With over 30,000 nozzles and 12-ink tanks, the colours are so gloriously bright your eyes will hurt and you’ll weep tears of utter visual joy. It’s capable of printing pictures so large you’ll never need to wallpaper again, but a better use would be to make massive prints that are good enough to sell in galleries, online or at craft fairs. And if that wasn’t enough, the prints have a 120 year lifespan so they won't fade until the start of the next ice age.

Canon logoYour competition theme then revolves around the fact that you don’t see a printer like the CanonimagePROGRAF 5000 very often. So, it's anything that can be categorised as something unusual. Unusual compositions, strange artefacts, people doing amazing things, clever people being stupid, elements taken out of their usual environments. Ask yourself, is that unusual? If it is, send it in. If it’s a picture of your cat, frankly, it ain’t gonna cut it. Unless it's busy doing the EPZ sudoku puzzle. That I'd like to see. In either case, it’s a requirement that every picture submitted must have the strapline, “You don’t see this every day.” Miss this off your image title and you miss out. Seriously folks, we’ve hired a teenage malcontent to simply sit there and delete any pictures that don’t have “You don’t see this every day” as an image title, so make sure you put it on your picture.
Prize Details

1ST PRIZE
Clear out any lesser printers from your computer area, tidy up the toys and polish your desk for the magnificent creature that is the Canon imagePROGRAF 5000. Yes, first prize this month bags a printer capable of producing huge A2 prints full of glorious colour and detail. Normal price is £1395, but Revolution have an offer running through September that throws in free ink and cuts the price to £1199.95 if you fancy getting one yourself.

The A2, 12-colour full pigment ink system of the iPF5000 large format printer offers gradation so fine only a colour imaging specialist can see where one ink colour ends and another shade starts. It has the kind of precise colour calibration that paint mixers at Dulux would certainly maim for and output that can only be described as outstanding. If you have a limited vocabulary. Otherwise add superb, astonishing and jaw-dropping to that heady list. Throw in the performance of champions and the versatile media compatibility of something that’s er, versatile, and media compatible, and you have the ultimate printer for photography and fine art.

Features

* Industry’s first 12-colour pigment ink A2 printer. Own it and brag about it.
* Twin print-head design for exceptional quality at blistering speeds – borderless A2 glossy prints in 1.8 minutes. Not enough time for a cuppa even.
* Incredible 2400x1200dpi reproduction. Detail so fine that the very word fine will seem course and crude in comparison.
* Outstanding colour stability, ultra glossy feel and high abrasion resistance. Caress it, love it.
* Highly efficient workflow with four media paths – roll, cassette and two manual feeds. Feed it often, keep it happy.
* Easy to use intuitive software including poster creation software (PosterArtist).
* Digital Photo Print Professional and Adobe PhotoShop Plug-In.
* Lightfastness for 120 years. After that, keep them in the loft.
* Total of 30,720 nozzles and a 4pl droplet size for very small droplets and lots of nozzles spraying the paper. It’s like a car wash, but with pictures.

If you win first prize, a team of specially trained handlers will bring the Canon imagePROGRAF 5000 round to your house in a print-resistant cage. Feed it some ink and off you go.

2ND PRIZE
Fret not if you didn’t win the brilliant Canon printer because second prize wins a special 24x17in. print on canvas from the printer’s big brother the iPF8000 44in.

3RD PRIZE
Ah you were worried now, thinking that perhaps you’d get the paper packaging that the ink cartridges came in. Well no, you get a 24x17in. canvas print as well.

4TH PRIZE
Guess what you’ve won. Go on, have a guess! Yes, I’ve tried to conceal what the prize might be in the other runner up spots, but by this point, if you’re still reading, then it’s blindly obvious that fourth place gets large canvas print as well. Well done you!

About our sponsors
Revolution Transfers, in conjunction with Canon, are our sponsors this month and have come up with the amazing A2 Canon imagePROGRAF 5000 printer as the prize. They have been in business since 1988, starting out as promotional clothing suppliers. After a period of Darwinian evolution they have emerged as experts in large format printing solutions for the sign, fine art, graphics and sublimation industries. They put the Canon printers to other good uses, creating films for screen printers and printed flock for clothing. You can read more about Revolution Transfers here.
