First off, this is not my specialty! I photograph horses & candid photo's of kids. My friend (the girl pictured) asked me to do some band pictures. I'm not a professional, just a girl with a camera :) Anyway, most of the guys just wanted basic group shots, nothing spontaneous. One mentioned he wanted a waist high shot. How/where do I crop these? How do I not make it look like their arms are cut off?

Crop to a standard print ratio - 4x6, 5x7, 8x10 (you need to think of this when you shoot if possible)
You need to leave 1/4" around the edges of the final print as that will be covered by the frame. (i fail on this one too often :D)
Don't crop on a joint (wrist, knee, knuckle, elbow, etc)
Closer is better for small prints - you need to be able to see the faces. Quarter size heads is about as small you want to go, and bigger is better.

Since HawkeyeLonewolf was so helpful, I was inspired to give it a shot even though I'm at work and only have MSPaint.

I like the first photo. It hides those tummies that the guys are probably requesting the chest up shots for. One thing that bothered me about the photo though was the shoes and how the pants fell against them. I cropped at the shin, and now I can imagine they all have perfectly fitted pants and fancy shoes like your friend.

Check out that MSPaint crop. Gotta love it.

Since it's digital, try some more shots. Arms around the shoulders; watch the hats, you might try to organize them differently; ;lay down on your back on the ground shooting straight up, have the entire group look down at you; use your imagination; shoot 100 picts and dump 90 of them. the last 10 everyone will like.

Thanks again! I'll play around more at home. I haven't heard back from them yet. Either they so good they were blown away and speechless at the moment (kidding)or they are that bad and don't know how to break it to me. I forwarned them, I don't do this type of photography and I'm only doing it for experience/practice. They are in no way obligated to use my pix and it won't hurt my feelings.
