I played with 2 of them yesterday (2 different lens/grip set-ups on them). What a lovely camera. I must have it. Anyone wanna buy a 20D? Mine is officially for sale! :)

Can't be that good - nobody here has ribboned with it yet. ;-)

BTW.......
Have you seen the new grip for it? It has wi-fi capability. You can use it to transmit to your laptop, trigger your studio lights, etc.! I heard it will retail about $1000.

Needs macro recording capability to auto-submit photos to DPC. I guess that would be like "phoning it in" though. :)

Would only be unfair if it automatically captured a multi-colored water drop every 12 seconds for all of eternity! :)

Peter, that's great! Hope you post your first impressions here.

I bought a 30D only about two months ago as a replacement for the 20D - its shutter died right in the middle of my photo vacation. I'm kicking myself a little, but at the time, I really felt like I had no choice.

That 40D looks sweet!

When I first saw the title of this thread, I thought it was porno-related! ;-)

Seriously, congrats on the new hardware.

Hopefully they will begin unloading ships in the U.S. soon. I would like to have mine by Saturday. They're showing up all over Asia, just have to be patient waiting for the boat to get here.

Upload some pictures to so we can drool. :p

Really interested in your review of this camera. Do post some pics and let us know what you think. Speed, Noise on High ISO's, live view, etc.

Quick feedback. Pics to follow this weekend.

Impressive silent shutter, unbelievable menu and the live view from heaven for doing macros. The pic quality is special.... something like upgrading from a P&S to a 20D....

But.... can not process my RAW in Photoshop CS3 or CS2.

I was a bit torqued when I bought my 30D a few months back and found I couldn't use CS to read RAW because they changed the format and I was forced to upgrade to CS3. Now they're doing ia again?? And there is no CS4 to be compelled to upgrade to. I suppse you have to use the software that comes with the camera to convert. That sucks. What are they thinking??

The Raw conversion issue will be the 14bit vs 12bit data issue..

I imagine that Adobe will do something in the way of a patch for it.

It usually takes Adobe a few months to catch up with format changes. I'm sure they'll get on it as soon as possible.

Congrats on the new camera!

Does lightroom open your raws?

Pisser about the RAW and CS3 :-(

Any sign of these in the Greater Toronto Area yet? I emailed Henry's-Toronto and they replied,
"The Canon 40D is going to be selling for $1399.99 and we’re expecting stock to arrive sometime in September, unfortunately we don’t know more then that at the moment. We are indeed taking pre orders though so if you’re looking to get one ASAP I would highly recommend getting an order in soon as they will be handled on a first come first serve basis."

and Duncan & Wright in Burlington, said,
"Still don't have any delivery information yet, but we are taking reservations."

But those emails were from Aug 21, though.

I'm debating on whether or not the 5D is too rich for my blood, and buying the 40D instead.

Nothing opens the RAWs.... but the jpegs are great... just posted some. Adobe Discussion boards also can not predict when the upgrade for this camera will become available.

Let's be honest, 2 ifs, if my 20D were not falling behind so fast and if I knew about the RAW issue, I might have waited. On the other hand.... whatta toy! Now I will not change my mind for anything.

I will look at the new 5D when it pitches in February... but this one is one massive improvement on the 20 D in every respect. get it, you won't be sorry.

If you're doing sports or action of any kind ... go for the 40D. If you're shooting mainly portraits or landscapes or architecture, then go for the 5D.

By the way, I still use my 5D for portraits. The Mark III gets used for sports and candids mostly. And the two 20Ds ...? They've been relegated to backup! :-)

Some reason you can't work the raws with the included software and then export the tiff into PS?
08/31/2007 11:04:15 AM · #25
I think what he means is that no third party app opens the RAWs yet. I would expect the software that came with it to do just fine. But that's a serious workflow change for many and I'm sure Adobe will get going pretty quick. Give it a month or so and I would expect support to start appearing.
