Lenses for Canon 40D? - DPChallenge Forums

Okay, so having decided to get the new Canon 40D, I now need to buy a couple of lenses to go with it :)

I want just 2 or 3 right now since I have zero lenses, having lost "custody" of them in my recent breakup. What would you get? My favorite everyday lens for my Rebel was the fixed 50mm b/c it was quick, large aperture, and nice crisp pictures. I was kind of thinking I'd get a 50mm and a decent telephoto, then (maybe in 6 months) a macro lens. Does this seem like a good selection? Lens recommendations?

Could get the 50mm then a set of extention tubes to do macro stuff. I like the Tamron 28-75 for my main walkaround lens its F2.8 and SHARP. The canon 70-200 F4 is great lens and relatively well priced.

It's just a device which pushes the lens farther away from the camera sensor enabling a non-macro lens to take macros.

ps ... for the record, I'm kind of against buying multiple lenses at once. Buy one, use it, decided what you're missing, buy another (if needed). Of course, your situation is different having owned many lenses and now ... not owning them.

Yeah, I'm only buying 2 or 3 now. I know I'll need at least that many so I have flexibility. The problem is that my ex had a bunch of lenses for a film camera so I never needed to buy any for the Rebel once I bought the body. I could look at the lenses we owned and pick the most appropriate one for the situation, but I never figured out what to look for in a lens I was buying.

edit to respond to doctornick: Honestly, I haven't really decided on a budget. I know that makes it a little hard. I am looking for good value for the money and I know good lenses are expensive and am okay with that.

I would say,

50mm 1.4
80mm 1.2
70-200mm 2.8 IS
24-75mm 2.8 Tamron
10-22mm 3.5-4.5

These would be my lenses I would have on my list to purchase. Many I actually own and probably would sick even worse if I didnt have them.

i'm thinking maybe the 300D autofocus system isn't quite up to the task of locking on any lens at 1.2

edit ... scratch that, forgot she's getting the 40D ... prolly work cool on that :)

Good value for money:
Canon 17-40mm f/4L for $679
Canon 70-200mm f/4L for $579.95
Canon 50mm f/1.8 for $79.95

These should get you started.

I would recommend - instead of the 50mm, get the 100mm 2.8 macro. A great portrait lens, good walk around lens AND does macros! More bang for your buck. :)

I'm currently using;

50mm F1.8
70-300 IS F4-5.6
17-40mm F4L

I'm prob going to sell off the 70-300IS soon and get the 70-200L F2.8 but those lenses seem to cover everything Ive shot so far from landscape to macro to portraits... and have a macro ring adapter to put the 50mm on to the end of the 70-300 or the kit lens which works awesome.

I've got both, and like them both. My only beef with the 100mm on a 1.6 crop sensor is that I have to get pretty far back to get head-to-toe shots. But sweet for headshots & macros! You can feel the price difference when you hold them, but I haven't noticed it in the final product, other than a smoother bokeh in the 100mm.

I haven't used one, but it seems like the Canon EF-S 17-55 2.8 IS would be a nice lens with some flexibility. I suppose it depends somewhat on the type of photography you normally do. Do you need speed or reach or both?

Oh ya, with that new "cross" focus they advertise, f/2.8 and wider sounds like it might be even nicer to have???

Which lenses did you use the most? If we know that we'd be making more tailored recommendations.

Help! Now that I'm ready to buy the 40D I'm not sure whether I should buy just the body or whether it's worthwhile to buy a body with a lens. Does anyone have an opinion on whether any of these lenses is worth the extra money or whether I should just go buy a quality lens to go with the body only?

The only lens you list on your profile is a fisheye, yet you've got shots in there clearly taken with other lenses. What lenses do you own? That would liekly impact the 'need' to get a lens with the body.

So I take it none of the options I listed are a particularly great value? I thought maybe they would be since they're packaged w/ the body (so maybe cheaper than if bought separately)?
