Sure...DPC...thanks. You knew I was on a camping trip, taking pictures. So, the day I come back, this is the challenge. I have some great shots from Monday and Tuesday...but it starts on the 8th...uh huh...thanks. :)

Yep, you and the guy that just got back from Tuscany. Drew & Langdon are out to get you two, because...well I don't know why, but they are.

I know Langdon is out to get me and my 4.8 average. The man is trying to keep me down. Even though, the guy who just got back from Tuscany would probably have MUCH better shots.

I have a question for you DPC long-timers.. Would the DPC audience think a desert landscape is 'rural'? I've asked around, and I'm getting mixed opinions. Some think rural is more field/farm than mountains/cactus. Thoughts?

If there isn't a cow in it, it isn't rural enough. Sorry. Semi-seriously though, I'd think of a desert landscape as wilderness. Rural usually means somewhat inhabited/ farmland sort of thing.

Wikipedia, that fountain of everything definitive, says

Rural areas (also referred to as "the country", countryside) are sparsely settled places away from the influence of large cities. Such areas are distinct from more intensively settled urban and suburban areas, and also from unsettled lands such as outback, American Old West or wilderness. Inhabitants live in villages, hamlets, on farms and in other isolated houses.

In modern usage, rural areas can have an agricultural character, though many rural areas are characterized by an economy based on logging, mining, petroleum and natural gas exploration, or tourism.

Is this rural enough for you (and I'm the guy who just came back from Tuscany):

What about a lanscape that includes a city skyline and tree covered mountains? If I take such a photo (a distinct possibility), will I need to crop out the trees?

Hope you had a great trip. Here's mine:

And no cows in mine either.

My dictionary (Mac Widget) says rural is: in, relating to, or characteristic of the countryside rather than the town. that same thesaurus says: "rural: adjective - country, countryside, bucolic, rustic, pastoral; agricultural, agrarian, literary sylvan, georgic." The real kee appears to be the origin of the word which is late middle english. No mountains or deserts there thus must be farm type, pastoral lands.

Ho mama! Just had one of those shooting sessions where you just shake because you don't believe what is unfolding before your eyes... :)

I would just to like to provide a quick rant.

I was in Saskatchewan for almost a week. I came home the day before this challenge started. For those of you who don't know, Saskatchewan is about as rural as it gets. Fields and more fields. Cows. Grain elevators galore. Trains with the requisite rail road crossings. Gravel roads. Fences complete with fence posts. Barns. Telephone poles. Old abandoned houses.

I have about 400 to 500 pictures of these things...taken 1 to 7 days too soon ;(

So, umm, can we get a third category called "Desolate Landscapes"? Probably will not stop me from entering a lovely 4.9 shot in one of the other anyway.

And quit bragging, Jason.

To those of you with the unfortunate timing on your adventures, just stick stuff up in your portfolios and time permitting, I'll wander through to see what you saw while you were out.

I think it needs some perspective - like more of a panoramic type image from farther away - not a close up of a cow. DAMN!

How about a rural landscape image OF a cow - it would be very OOB and posthumous would probably love it!? I love your up close animal photos

:P Sorry. Just was really excited. Don't worry, when I get really psyched about a picture, it tends to score a 5.3 to put me in my place.

I think rural is the opposite of urban, so yes a desert is rural in the context of this weeks challenge.

I'm thinking of shooting a cityscape with the title "this used to be rural" or maybe enter the other challenge with a photo of a field titled "this will be urban in the future"

Macrorural. I'd reshoot it but I'm having trouble relocating that particular rock. :-)
