| Hi everyone. Something about the challenges does bother me sometimes and i wanted to know what others think about it,In my opinion ,sometimes the title of te challenges are not really the same as their descriptions,For example extreme emotions says "Faceless" whereas the explanation provided says "The face of .... should not be the MAIN focus" ,I'm not a good photographer so the least i can do is to stick with explanations and i am getting comments on the face in the photo ,that i thought was not the main focus, and how it should not be there since the challnege says faceless, anyone else with similar problems? |

That's because it's open to interpretation and if you have 250 votes, there are 250 different interpretations on the challenge theme. Even if it was all perfect to the tee, you'd still get people interpreting it differently and commenting.
I submitted this entry to the stationery challenge
where the teepees are made of colored pencils and even the campfire is made of pencil shavings and I had two people giving me a DNMC. Now if that's not stationery then Elvis is alive and well and living in Graceland. So it's all subjective. Don't take it too seriously. |

Yes, it's a problem when they put up titles and descriptions that contradict each other. Your safest bet is to go with the title, because many people don't read the details, and I'd bet no one reads the details but ignores the title.
Of course, to improve as a photographer quite apart from the specific DPC score, you can take the DNMC comments pretty lightly and focus on constructive criticism about the shot itself.
My one piece of advice is not to be subtle if you care about the score. There are too many cultural differences across DPC to be sure sly references will mean the same thing to everyone. "Stationery" is just one example. It means, quite definitively, "paper" in many places, not to include things like pencils.
Again, score and photographic skill are only loosely connected, so focus on what you care about and ignore the rest.

It seems that (and I'm willing to be corrected if I'm wrong) much of the interpretation is left up to the voters. And of course, you can't ask them (us? lol) until it's too late.
Plus even when there is something that people (SC or the photographers) think "everyone knows" - there are usually at least 20 different interpretations. Plus some will always push/fight the boundaries. Just look at the still life entries! |

I'm having the same problem. I think I took the best picture i have ever done, and it has more views and votes than i have ever had before, but the face is showing. People are leaving comments like "face 1" "i see a face" "don't see the emotion"
It sucks!!!
why did they contradict the title with the description??? |

Forget the "faceless" rule--most of the photos are really not that extreme. Most are just simple emotion, at best. The word "extreme" was put in the description on purpose! To me, that means the photo should be over-the-top, intense, and very severe.

I thought I did that and most comments agree, but a couple don't see any emotion at all. I think it is a hard one as each person has their own definition of what is an extreme emotion. I have commented on a a third or so, but am not voting because I found it hard to decide if it met the challenge.

Well, I tried to capture what I think is one of the worst things that could happen to a person, but because the subject itself isn't technically emoting, I got several "what emotion?" comments. And I thought my title explained it.
In any case it will be interesting to see how it falls out tomorrow. At the very least, I set myself a new low... |

Donna, I went back to view your entry and, IMHO and with all due respect, a tombstone is really something that is all too common to expect emotion, let alone "extreme" emotion.
Hang in there, though. This was only your second challenge. Those that learn from their early submissions progressively get much better as they enter more challenges. I'm rooting for ya! ;-)

Yeah, DPC is a ruthless crowd. As others have advised, it is generally better to create your photograph as per the challenge description, and not so much per the detailed description. Having said that, not only do you have a face in this "faceless" challenge, you have two faces in the image!
Keep up the good work. I can see potential in your work. I especially like your "The never-ending shopping list" image!

| You're right.i do have 2 faces,now that i see the results i kinda understand what the acceptable photo would have been, So let me remind myself again, stick with the titles.!! |
