Convince me that a point-and-shoot camera can win ribbons …
My camera isn't on the list: Nikon s10.
I gotta have goals ! ;P

Right - this is pretty heavilly edited though. Any less edited images?

How about a 7.8539 / Blue Ribbon with 1.2MP?


And a 7.2227 / Yellow Ribbon with 1.2MP?

And here I am with thousands of dollars of equipment... I'd give it all up to take shots like those.

I'm not sure where this thread is going, there are loads of examples like that. All it proves (again) is that it's the photographer who makes the picture.

Time and time again its been said and proven that it's the artist and NOT the brush that creates a masterpiece. same holds true with cameras and every other medium used to "create".

Look at the dates on all of those though.. mostly in 2003.

If those pictures were up now they would get alot of hype about bad quality.

DPChallenge is much more competitive now.

Im here struggling with my Canon PS SD450. And im in mourning for the loss of my Nikon.

New cam soon though.

The 'bad quality' that DPC doesn't like anymore is primarily a change in post processing techniques. New challenges go for strong saturated colours, heavy noise removal, and lots of sharpening. The base images are the same and it doesn't matter what camera you use to generate them.

but still, the noise in most of those pictures wouldnt be there had they used a better camera... and you cant always rely on post processing to fix a picture

im not putting those pictures down at all, they are amazing pictures, im just saying im not sure how well they would do if judged as they are in current challenges.

I'll bet you do. Those are some stunning shots Sher. I went through your profile a few weeks ago and added a few favorites. Didn't notice that they were taken with an older camera at the time. lol

Hmmm, tonights roll-over is a DPL challenge again. We could also just ask the ribbonhogs to bring along their point-and-shoots when they go ribbon hunting and do a few captures with them. I'm not saying they'd need to submit with them, but looking at the outtakes would be interesting - comparing the quality and all that jazz.

Hi Juli welcome to DPC. Do you not have a D-70? If not the s10 looks like a fine p&S. It's 6mp as long as your fundamentals are there you should do ok. I would recomend getting a tripod and learning all the capabilities your camera has. Learn as much as you can about image editing. I've only been here for about eight months or so and I've learned alot from these good folks. Good luck. PS. You dont have to ribbon here to enjoy the site, I'm lucky if I get in the top 50%, but I love it anyway:-)

I know, it's not great, but it IS a ribboner, since 2003, and with basic editing.

I wouldnt bet on that. I'm still seeing sports shooters use the 4MP original 1D camera, and selling lots of stuff for print and for editorial use.

Yeah, but it sure is a lot easier and usually more enjoyable when you have a nice brush and some quality paint to start with.

and that was January of THIS year.
:-)

...and, that same week, there were 2 other ribbons on the front page by point n shoots!
