I am looking into getting a basic lens thats fast, so im looking right now at the nikon 50 mm af nikkor. im wondering if the f/1.4 is really worth the extra bit of money... although a bit faster than the f/1.8, the distortion is an issue. anyone have either of those lenses and see a reason to get one or the other? opinions, point of views, ideas? thanks guys!

I'm not a nikonian and I dont own that lens yet, but i'm definitely going for that fast 1.4 over the 1.8 when i do.

I just got the 1.8 and really like it, I have seen some pretty good comments about the 1.8. Not sure if the 1.4 is that much better or not but the 1.8 is a nice sharp lens.

distortion?
there's not distortion with either of those lenses, they are not wide angle, and not telephoto enough for pincushion really.

i have the 1.8 and its great, but the 1.4 is even more great. get it if you can afford it, but the 1.8, honestly will probably usually be fine.

the photog im workin for right now has a canon 50 1.0 and 1.2 ...thats what id like haha.
where is nikon with makin faster primes???

Heh. I think you will probably be quite happy with the Nikon f/1.8. I've used it a bit on someone else's camera and it handles quite nicely.

I've said it before, but I don't make the same comparison with the Canon 50mm lenses, but the Nikon f/1.8 is a fair bit more money than the Canon variant. Worth it IMHO.

Having just switched from a 50mm f/1.8 to a f/1.4, the biggest things I notice are:

Focus accuracy (probably not a real issue as this was more a failing of the Canon plastic jobbie)

Bokeh - satisfactory at f/1.8. SWEET at f/1.4

Sharpness and contrast at wide apertures. Again, both incarnations of the Nikon 50 do fairly well here. Generally speaking, the 50mm f/1.4 ought to be just a bit nicer at f/1.8 than the f/1.8. The difference might be rather minimal though.

I assume you have seen the images taken here at DPC … I was suprised when the likes of Librodo had a 1.8 !!! ;0 … so it can't be that bad. I have the 1.4 which I believe is heaview (not a heavy lens thoug) and metal - kinda noisy - I can't speak for the 1.8 but I don't hear people complaining about it!

I spent the extra $200 CDN and went for the 1.4 after having compared the two lenses here (1.4 vs. 1.8) and here. Money well spent!

I would say try them both out. I almost let Ken Rockwell talk me out of the 1.4, but I'm glad I ignored his "advice" this time.
