OK, so I know that you can get these little portable hard drives/ ipod type things where you can put in your memory card in the side slot and the pictures on it transfer automatically to the hard drive. how is that called?

Is this sort of what you were looking for?

A laptop and a really big card would be easier I think. Looks pretty cool. Not sure how reliable it is.

no. the one's i'm talking about have a capacity of 20-30-40-50 gigs. They have a slot for different types of memory cards and you can empty your cards by transfering everything onto this device.

Any of the Epson products will suit your purpose.

P2000
P4000

P3000
P5000

The 3000 and the 5000 allow for zooming on RAW files. The screen is a nice size for doing a preliminary check of images.

I too had an older one from kanguru.com but it has stopped reading my cards. I used it all the time even though it was a bit slow. I can still use it as a external hard drive but not a card reader. They also now make one that burn right to a CD, not sure how good the battery life is on those. If I was to get a new one I would probably go with one that has an image display but that really isn't important to me at all.

As stated a laptop is probably a better bet because of multi-tasking and better battery life, but sometimes you just can't (or don't want to) carry something like that around.
