Cool. Gotta check it out. Btw, is Adobe paying you? :P

hehe ... uh, no.

In spite of the speed issues, I really do like Lightroom. Here's hoping 1.1 solves the speed issues. It's installing right now!

I would be very interested if there is a speed increase but not holding my breath after getting the x.1 updates for my creative and design suites. but on the other hand the "Flexible image management for multi-computer workflows" has peaked my interest as I have a little over 8TB of drives spread across 5 machines here now and its a real PITA to manage ATM.

Well David, any noticeable differences or enhanced features you've found yet?

well the first couple min of playing with it, it defiantly feels faster than the last one, Ill need a day or three to put it through its paces but so far I'm liking it and thats bringing up photos off my server down stairs over gigabit :)

First impressions...

- I still don't like that it uses a database. RSP didn't and I didn't miss it. It just seems like extra overhead without any real benefit for someone who doesn't keyword anything. I wish I could optionally turn it off.

- Speaking of the database... apparently 1.1 uses a new database format and so it needs to upgrade your 1.0 database. Unfortunately, after spending about 5 minutes working mine over, it ended up aborting. I couldn't even re-launch Lightroom until I simply deleted the database. Good riddance, I don't need it.

Those are the bad news. The good news is:

- The user interface is quicker (moving from image to image) so there is less wasted time as you move from image to image deciding what to keep, what to throw away, what to develop and what settings to apply. (it can still take awhile to load the initial image, but it seems to hide this fact better than 1.0 did)

- The new Clarity option is really nice. It's essentially the same thing as Local Contrast USM (low amount, high radius). Whenever I post images here in DPC, I run a short script which reduces the image size, sharpens (for loss of acuity during the reduction) and then applies Local Contrast USM. But when I'm posting proofs for customers, I upload straight out of Lightroom, which up until has meant no Local Contrast enhancement. Clarity solves that for me. Which increases the quality of the "proofs" that I show to customers. So this is a big win for me.

To be honest, those are the only two things I really noticed as being different. So if there are more things hidden under the covers, I hope others will speak up and share what they find.

OH, DUH!!!

And LR 1.1 supports the new Mark III. (silly me)

cool, I've been waiting for the improvements in Camera Raw 4.1 to come over to Lighroom.

Okay, I didn't compile this list, I saw it over on DPReview, but here are some more new features:

The Library interface looks slightly different (not functionally different though).

* New buttons on right pane

* "Painter" icon (spray paint can) on bottom pane basically gives you a new option as a way to copy various settings between photos in the grid view. Select what it is you want to copy to other photos on the right of the painter when it's selected.

* New A-Z Sort button on bottom pane. Allows you to reverse the sort. There's also a drop-down to the right of it that allows you to choose how you want photos sorted

In Develop you will notice there are new sliders/changes:

* Clarity, which I'm finding to be very nice on the few photos I've tested it with so far. (Found above Vibrance and Saturation.)

* Sharpening controls: Radius, Detail, and Masking. These are carried over from Photoshop.

* ! triangles to warn you that you should zoom in when making those specific edits. If you click on them it brings you to 1:1 zoom level.

* Defringe under "Chromatic Aberration" section. I haven't tried this out all that much, but it appears to control whether it's correcting CA on all edges or just edges that register as highlights (so that you're not correcting CA on something that may not need it).

* Spot Healing/Cloning now shows a live preview of what the change will make as you move/resize the spot you're using to cover with.

* Red-eye reduction now produces an elliptical point instead of having you drag a square. You can enlarge/shrink the adjustment area and you can modify how dark the correction is.

* Develop Settings are now categorized and categories can be expanded/collapsed. Looks like they threw in a few more settings as well.

Slideshow: I don't use this much so I'm not certain of any differences. The new buttons throw me off a little.
Print: Same comment as Slideshow

Web: I'm just slightly more familiar with than the last two. There may be some new styles.

I didn't think Lightroom had Spot Healing and Cloning features. Is this right?

Yup, non-destructive as well. You can go back after a few months and see what it is you cloned out. awesome. Been using it since release day and has definitely improved my workflow, took a while getting used to it, but an essential part of my camera-kit these days.

Improved sharpening is the biggest godsend to me, the sharpening tool was `OK` in LR 1.0, but for important images I was always opening them up in CS2 to have maximum control.

I tried Lightroom awhile back and didn't really like it. I just can't seem to break away from my Rawshooter Premium! :(

yeah i was the same, tried it, didn't really take to it.. but i probably didn't give it enough attention at the time, might go back and have another try :)

I didn't like the LR beta so much. When 1.0 came out, I forced myself to use it until it grew on me. I had the hardest time getting over the speed difference between RSP and LR. Even 1.1 is still slower than RSP, but there are capabilities in LR that RSP never had. And those capabilities are things I now rely on to get the best "proofing images" I've ever done. I'll still use Photoshop before printing an image. But I really like the quality of proofs that I am posting.

But just think ... if I hadn't already converted, I would be forced to do so now, because RSP won't ever support the Mark III. It's dead. It's time to move on. :-)

yeah, the database thing was a pain, i just let it sit and it eventually kicked in, even though i had the (not responding) text up there for awhile.

Definately faster transitions between images

All the Camera Raw 4.1 changes moved over

I'll play with it more later, but its definately better now than it was yesterday.

Preset now recognizes folders, and some new tools - better file folder organization overall. Appears a bit slower to me.

I love how you can hold down the atl key while you play with the sharpening sliders and see exactly what you are editing (what areas are being effected)
here is a little page with a good description of how they work

Are you asking about the size before or after upgrading to LR 1.1?

It was something like 5.8Gb before I deleted it. :-)

I imported last night's shoot (baby pictures) and last week's engagement shoot into LR last night, but I haven't looked since then to see how big it is.
