I want to order a couple of extra batteries for my new Nikon. On my Canon, I used power2000 batteries and they worked as well or better than the canon battery.
Can anyone share their experience for the Nikon D80? (Also, is it the same battery as the D200?) |

| I just got a D80, and the batteries are excellent. Very compact, and they retain the charge very well. I've been using the camera for about a week, and im still at 2/3s full charge. I'd assume the D80 batteries would be the same as the D200, i think most of nikons newer dslrs use the same type. |

Not sure how often he shoots. But how well does the battery perform after 500 shots in a single day. Or during a multiple hour astro shot?
He maybe looking for aftermarket simply because their usually less expensive and tend to perform as well if not better.

You should always have two batteries; one fully charged, and one in your camera. Run the one down in your camera, then swap, and when you get home, charge the extra one. That way, you don't have to recharge a partly discharged battery. |

I have 1 Nikon battery and one off-brand (Lenmar) for the D200. It seems to me that the Nikon battery charge lasts a little longer, but I'm not sure, never really checked into it carefully. If there's a difference, it's not much.
In my very limited experience with Canon cameras, the Nikons use battery power a lot faster than Canons.
With the D200, I can shoot both 2 gig cards I have and upload them to computer with one charge, some power left. I use the LCD quite a bit though.

I use a grip with 2 batteries on board. I shoot a lot in a day.
Nikon or 3rd party batteries seem fine to me they both work great. |

However some batteries like LiIon batteries like to be topped off and not drained. Many LiIon batteries will last 45 or so 100% charges and then start to show performance decrease while ones that are topped of tend to last a bit longer.
This is why laptop batteries go bad so fast people tend to drain them for their 1 or 2 (even 3 to 4) hours of life.

As I understand it the D80 lasts longer than the D200. I have the grip and 2 EN-EL3E's (Yes the D80 and D200 use the same battery) and I can get over 2000 exposures without flash before charging less with a flash.
I chose to use only Nikon so it does not affect my warranty and I am a Nikon loyalist. :-)

I don't think you can generalize battery use with Nikon's. For example, my D70s hardly uses any battery, while my D200 goes through them like crazy.
I'm shocked however, to hear that you can only shoot two 2-gig cards on one charge with your D200. I think it's time for a new battery. |

| My off brand battery (Digital Concepts) works just fine. It doesn't seem to differ from the Nikon EN-EL3 that I have, or the other one that I had prior to that EN-EL3 recall. I do think the EN-EL3e that I got out of the recall lasts a little longer though (as it's supposed to). |

Yeah, I guess if you use the LCD a lot and also use the camera to dump the pictures you can eat them up even quicker.
Why not use a card reader to unload the pics? |

I have some third party batteries for our D-50 which seem to last almost as long as the nikon batts.
Never had a battery go dead with my d-200 til I started taking star trails. a 60 minute exposure nearly kills a full charge batt. Edit: (This is with the long exposure noise reduction turned on).
First time I have ever drained a batt completely in one shoot. or basically 1 shot.

I was never able to run down battery in my D70. Ever. Even when I was shooting all day on GTG or all evening shooting a wedding.
Also, batteries last longer if don't discharge them completely. I always charge mine when I come home after shooting.

I'm surprised no one has said this yet but sterlingtek makes some great batteries and are far cheaper than normal. I've been using the sterlingtek battery over the Canon one since I got the camera. It lasts a good 100 shots longer than the Canon one too.

I bought a generic battery that was a dud. Took it back and the new one works just fine.
What I've really noticed is that even when I forget to switch the D200 off for hours, it uses very little battery. I guess it doesn't take much to power up the small LCD on top.
