Was just browsing through this section of the forums and read this thread and the original post had one thing that sounded pretty cool to me.

How about a speed challenge where only the first 100 are in and we don´t really have a time limit on it? As soon as the 100th person enters, the voting starts, wether that will be 6 hours after the challenge is announced or if it´s 72 hours after. The voting would still be a week though, maybe 7 days + what´s left of the day the voting began?

I don´t know how easy or hard it would be to implement this regarding coding and stuff like that but I would think this would be a cool concept, to have to fight for a 100 spots in the challenge.

I know that with a system like this people could immediately put in place holders to save a spot for them but would you take the chance of doing that, go out to take a photo and come back two hours later and find out your placeholder is now in the voting stage? I know I wouldn´t, and besides I believe most people would play by the rules or "spirit" of the challenge so I don´t really think that would be a big problem.

I like the idea. The place holders would definitely not work unless I risk scores in 3s.

if this happens at 12:00 EST, I still have 3 hrs to shoot before I sleep :)

The placeholder problem can easily be fixed by restricting each member to just ONE submission.

Once you submit an image, it's locked in.

That would be cool, but with the community spread out across all different time zones, this would have to start at some random time during the day/night to give those of us that are in the server time zone a chance to sleep at night. :) (I can see myself sitting up until midnight every night wondering if this will be the night that the challenge begins!)

i like the idea. i think voting should only be 1 week though, and it would start on midnight the day 100 entries are reached... and yes, it should be on random times. to give everybody a chance.

Cool idea. I like!

Although I probably wouldn't be fast enough to get in on it, I think it's a great idea.

I also think we need another challenge where you can only enter if your comments given is a certin % over your comments received.

Definitely a cool idea. I will second the problem about differing time-zones however.

This presents many problems, including (as was seen the last time this was tried) manipulation of comment-counts. It's not really reasonable since it's impossible (in theory) to make as many comments as you have the potential to receive.

couldnt this idea work as exclusive open challenges where the two challenges start 12 hours apart? one starting at the normal midnight and the other at noon. Differant subjects but the same 100 entries only rule.

couldnt the speed challenge just be scheduled, not letting the subject be known until the scheduled time. That way we can all await the unveiling of the subject matter and start simultaneously, competing for one of the 100 spots

I really like the idea as well. SC has not said anything about this idea yet... Hmmmm.... maybe it's in the works. :-)
