Sometimes I like to take the backward approach to music enjoyment. Instead of finding a song I like and exploring the band, I like to find a band and explore their music.

When I was a kid, Led Zeppelin was "devil music". I feared it. Later in life I have grown to appreciate quality 70s rock. Zeppelin was obviously one of the better acts out there.

Where would fans say I should start? I'm going with Led Zeppelin II and Led Zeppelin III for now. Of the songs I currently enjoy, I like their lighter side. Kashmir, Gallow's Pole, Tangerine, Thank you are among the songs I know and enjoy.

Anyways, just thought it would be fun for us geezers to talk about a great band and what we like about it...

Cindi's right. Zeppelin 4 is a good way to break in. Then you can move on to AC/DC, Iron Maiden and some of the harder stuff. ;-)

Ha, AC/DC I don't mind too much. I had a roommate in college who liked Maiden and I can easily say that wasn't my style. Except for "The thing that should not be". I remember liking that one...

not trying to start a debate but the who kicked zeplins ass.

I'm a big Zep fan. III is the best acoustic effort. Physical Graffiti is not to be missed. First disk is more rockin', second is more acoustic. Lots of good stuff there.

well! your atract the attention of maybe the biggest led zep fan on the site.

Led Zep is always better with something in your brain, drinks or maybe mushroom like someone said before...

They Said is the devil music but it isnt, is just loud. and of course the fact that jimmy page sold his soul to the diablo just for amazing guitar skillss.

i recommend the live on stage cds. such as The song remains the same, how the west was won, bbc session. there are just amazing

Technology has ruined me! I have all the Led Zeppelin stuff - but it's all ripped into MP3's so I couldn't tell you the albums to save me now - box sets will ruin that too...

I grew up with the devil music - Zep was just the first step to many bands that took a piece of my hearing (and my soul according to my dad).

As I've mellowed with age, so has the Zep. Robert Plant has a couple of solo albums out that I totally devoured - but I had the whole history of listening to him in other times.

In through the Out Door is like that too. I appreciated it for what it was - with 8 years of hard core pure Zep in me - and I hated it then. But it's grown on me (like a fungus I suppose).

I think of what it would have been like to go to the record store and find the white album sitting there and take home this "new" band called Led Zeppelin and carefully putting the needle down on that new vinyl and hearing that sound come out of the hifi for the first time... man it gives me goosebumps thinking about it.

There's a PBS show that airs late with Robert Plant doing Zep stuff and his new stuff - it's all variations on a theme - but I'm just amazed how an old guy could be so good. If you can find it it's worth the time I think - but I have the history.

It would be cool to discover a band that good now.

If you really want to get into Zeppelin I'd recommend you start with the music they "borrowed from" - yep, even Stairway to Heaven's intro which they ripped off from Spirit who toured with them early on.
They've also had to pay out some serious cash in settlement money to those they stole from.
An unoriginal as you can get!

"Babe I'm Gonna Leave You" - A folk song by Anne Bredon, this was originally credited as "traditional, arranged by Jimmy Page," then "words and music by Jimmy Page," and then, following legal action, "Bredon/Page/Plant."
"Black Mountain Side" - uncredited version of a traditional folk tune previously recorded by Bert Jansch.
"Bring It On Home" - the first section is an uncredited cover of the Willie Dixon tune (as performed by the imposter Sonny Boy Williamson).
"Communication Breakdown" - apparently derived from Eddie Cochran's "Nervous Breakdown."
"Custard Pie" - uncredited cover of Bukka White's "Shake 'Em On Down," with lyrics from Sleepy John Estes's "Drop Down Daddy."
"Dazed And Confused" - uncredited cover of the Jake Holmes song (see The Above Ground Sound Of Jake Holmes).
"Hats Off To (Roy) Harper" - uncredited version of Bukka White's "Shake 'Em On Down."
"How Many More Times" - Part one is an uncredited cover of the Howlin' Wolf song (available on numerous compilations). Part two is an uncredited cover of Albert King's "The Hunter."
"In My Time Of Dying" - uncredited cover of the traditional song (as heard on Bob Dylan's debut).
"The Lemon Song" - uncredited cover of Howlin' Wolf's "Killing Floor" - Wolf's publisher sued Zeppelin in the early 70s and settled out of court.
"Moby Dick" - written and first recorded by Sleepy John Estes under the title "The Girl I Love," and later covered by Bobby Parker.
"Nobody's Fault But Mine" - uncredited cover of the Blind Willie Johnson blues.
"Since I've Been Lovin' You" - lyrics are the same as Moby Grape's "Never," though the music isn't similar.
"Stairway To Heaven" - the main guitar line is apparently from "Taurus" by Spirit.
"White Summer" - uncredited cover of Davey Graham's "She Moved Through The Fair."
"Whole Lotta Love" - lyrics are from the Willie Dixon blues "You Need Love."

Add Jethro Tull to your watch list ;)

As to Zeppelin, check out this video of a great Zeppelin song "Kashmir" being played at (you guessed it) a Jethro Tull concert featuring an incredible violinist.

I can't recommend any Led Zep songs, all are great! Just start somewhere and keep getting the albums until you have them all, or just borrow them. Also check out Robert Plant solo albums, Now and Zen, Manic Nirvana and Fate of Nations are the best, avoid The Principle of Moments...it is very poor.

Also check out Def Leppard, some great tracks. All their albums are good and rocky. Also Deep Purple, Rainbow...the list is endless.

Remember, loud and proud. Gotta have some volume for best results.
