I'll be in the bay area all next week and I am looking for suggestions on shooting the evening skyline, the GGB and the wharfs.

Thanks in advance.

I've never made it there myself, but Treasure Island should be a good spot to get all of those subjects -- it's the low flat island to the right of the Bay bridge in this shot taken from the Oakland Hills.

A great vantage point for the GGB is from Marin Headlands. If you are traveling south on highway 101, marin headlands is the last exit on the right before getting to the bridge. You can go up to various lookouts although the lookouts farther up the road close at sunset (don't worry, an officer drives through to remind people before closing it down). As for a picture of the SF skyline, Treasure Island is a great place. There is a large parking lot which has a great view of the SF skyline. I've included two maps and a few pictures from the two locations

Treasure Island is a great place to take pics of the SF Skyline
and the Golden Gate Bridge. This was taken with the Sigma 50-500
at full extension and is severely cropped. TI also gives you great views
of the Bay Bridge (both directions) and, looking East, Berkeley/Oakland.

from the same shoot, the Bay Bridge

Enjoy your time in San Francisco!

This is excellent. Thanks all. I'll probably do Treasure Island one evening and Marin Headlands the next. Have any of you ever shot from mount Diablo? A few coworkers have suggested that location as well.

Thanks again.

The Marin Headlands doesn't really have a view of sunset if you want San Francisco or the bridge also in the frame since you'd be facing S / SE instead of westward. Nice twilight photos can be had from there though with the city and bridge lights.

Mount Diablo is nice because you can drive right up to the top and gives you a nice overview of the East Bay but because of the perspective and distances it doesn't make for great sunset photos IMO. Depends on what type of sunset photos you're looking for though.
