Okay... Just who are you, who's telling you to look at certain photographs, did they tell you how to score any, and just what is it about 'upside down' that you don't understand?

Oh... and one more. Is there a booger stuck under your caps lock key?
05/20/2002 11:20:16 AM · #3
i thought melzymel's comments were funny .. caps lock and all ... : )

She questioned whether my photo and Shiiizzzam's photos were taken during the challenge week. I find nothing funny about that.

here's my comment from melzymel:

melzymel - 5/13/2002
did not like it, even when it was a thumb nail

Its about the only negative comment i got... It's a worthless comment since it doesnt' say what he/she doesn't like...

same with me. I'm thinking that he/she was going by weather. A bit of a strange bugger if you ask me.
05/20/2002 11:43:20 AM · #7
probably doesn't realise that the weather in other parts of the world can be different to where she lives :)

That's no critique. Mine was .... it's just summer weather here:)

I think I got you all beat -- mine was only a single, very non-specific, neutral "really"

I thought melzymel's comments were all funny to read.

oh.. hmm, i had no idea. well here was the comment on mine:

melzymel - 5/13/2002
VERY HAIRY LEGS, NEED TO SHAVE

Even though I am not sure I agree with using forums to talk about specific members, I am thankful that others have had similar experiences to mine. My comment was: "not what we are looking for....are we" which didn't make any sense to me. It's amazing how, when I can't see other comments for other photos and the comments are anonymous, I get so wrapped up in trying to figure out the "hidden message" behind one stray comment. I know now that I was not alone.

Unfortunate thing here is that this is probalby one of those casual voters who would never consider reading these forums...

05/20/2002 11:58:25 AM · #14
voting average around 2.7, and apparently here at the request of someone - "I was told to look at this pic" or words to that effect.
05/20/2002 12:06:41 PM · #15
I think about half of the voters are probably here for that reason...

What? Who would think that crabs only come out in the summertime?

good thought

i guess that could go both ways.

i understand some people never can make up their minds about certain things. or any things at all, for that matter.

come to think of it, she's probably still just someone's foul young offspring. most people over the age of 12 know how to turn off caps lock.

Well....I won't go down my same, tired old beaten down road (LOUD applause is heard...let me wait for a second.....doo.bedooo...hmmm..hmmm..O.K.)

We are stuck with having to take every overused, uncooked, obscure, mean-spirited, etc, etc..comment on the internet as long as every overused, uncooked, obscure, mean spirited, etc, etc PERSON who inhabits the internet can vote here.

So..unless we want to go the way of a restricted site in some way we will continue to get the Melzymel's of the world imparting their wisdom, artistic insight or whatever on us from their dark corners of the world.

I think if you hang out here long enough most of the contributors will figure out who to listen to and who not to listen to. (Mom..I told you to vote a 10...1 does not mean best here!!!!)

if i recall correctly from the earlier days of dpc, the admins mentioned multiple challenges and probably also seperate skill level stuff would be coming along.
so, sooner or later the bottom feeders wont be voting or submitting (or however it'll work) to your classy little black and white shindigs, and whatnot.

My comment from Melzymel was "n/a". Is that supposed to mean not applicable?

question: from a practical perspective, how would such a site be regulated?

pay 4 play?

presumably, by seperating new photographers' challenges from advanced ones, you wont have idiots coming in and rating your shit. the rich get richer.

personally i feel that voter-only accounts should be weighted at no more than 50% of photographer accounts when voting, to start. then you can break it up so advanced can vote on lesser for constructive purposes (maybe _require_ a comment), but not vice versa. moving from beginner to advanced would be simple: score high in the challenges. show effort.

-
actually i also suggested a newbie challenge, for brand new accounts, such that you would be required to submit and place anywhere (even dead last, for the sake of follow-through) before you were considered a 'beginner', and before you had access to the forums.

as far as voter-only accounts go, though, i don't know. i dont really like the idea of random yahoos voting on my shit. look at some of the crap photos that get at least a 5.0 because they have tits or contain the word 'dpchallenge' somewhere in them. the fuck does that come from? this is a _challenge_ to be creative, original, clever, whatever. not to just take a pretty picture. your random voter does not understand this. they have not put time, effort, or thought into taking a single picture. and.. that's all i need say

i really dont think this is gonna make any difference - unless you regulate the site explicitly to 'people who promise never to step on anyone else's feelings, and therefore just act bland and agreeable all the time.'

believe me, there are just as many boors amongst the so-called intelligentsia and creative contributors as there are amongst the so-called unwashed. the main difference is the former group can rip you to shreds far more cleverly and articulately ; ) ..

i you don't believe me, go on photo.net and watch how they rip into each other.

i've frequented lots of sites in my time, and I actually think that this site, for an open site, does an INCREDIBLE job of having a high signal to noise ratio. there is an unusually large preponderance of intelligent, helpful folks here, and truly very few buttmunches.

i think if someone's ego is so fragile and they have so much doubt that the occasional obvious retard or lame-o can destroy their equilibrium, then maybe public exposition of their art in a critique format is not what they should be participating in. . .

just some active discussion : )

i'll take your word for it. any of that shit and i might start cappin' bitches with mah nine

its also a wee baby in the internet age.. just look at the photographer profiles list for the date of the first account that wasn't clued in on the existence of the site. i think its mine, and only because ryan doesnt share. bitch.

you raise a good point though. my theory there really just rests on hope that people are classifyable just barely enough to dig up the weeds, nothing else. what's that saying? past trends do not always indicate future results? yeah.

if i cant come up with a good idea i get angry and try to find a way to piss people off. this is a flaw in my character because i have no self esteem.
