It got a couple of spots on my LCD...coffee? snot? bug poop? I don't know, but it's annoying the hell out of me!
Does windex and a cloth (paper towel, micro fiber or ??) work, and is it safe?
Is something else better?
Should be monitor be off or does it matter?
Any other precautions?

Brillo pad and WD40 should NOT be used ;-P
Seriously, I've used water and a soft cloth, on occasion I've used Windex... no damage so far!

better with a vinegar & alcohol & water , 1:1:4 (isopropl alcohol will do)
don't use sprays that contain ammonia they will fog your screen

I have always just used a damp paper-towel. I'll add one drop of washing up liquid if things are stubborn and then go over with a second, damp only, paper towel. The main thing is to take your time and not to press too hard. I would never use any other sort of detergent unless I had positive knowledge that it would not damage the screen.
I clean it with the power off for safety reasons - water, electricity.

Sony has a little LCD cleaning kit. I use that one for my lenses. :)
For LCD stuff I use little cleaning towels that I have for my glasses.

| the Windex Wipes we have say they're safe for LCD/laptop screens and seem to work fine (iirc there's no ammonia in Windex). But first I just try to clean them with a microfiber cloth that came with my LCD television. |

i got a pack of anti-static cleaning wipes from WalMart called Nice'nClean. says it is safe and effective on non-glare monitors and laptops. works like a charm. i got the small pack of 24 to try but they have a larger pack, too.

| i usually clean it with my shirt or hand. LCD screens are really tough so there's no harm (unless your 30D has a fragile one for unknown reasons). for tougher stains, i usually add a bit of saliva. |

| LCD screens are pretty tough as a rule, really just rub it off with a soft cloth of some sort, not a biggy.. |

| Only use an LCD screen after dark, but I can't see anyway, so it doesn't matter. I would put some windex on a cotton cloth and the wipe the screen. I don't like the idea of spraying liquid directly on an item that is so reliant on battery power. :) |

| speaking of that, I was told once to NEVER spray your screen, you should always spray the cloth then wipe the screen. Supposedly if you spray the screen it can run down into the monitor...any truth to this anyone??? I would think they are sealed pretty good. |

those cleaning liquid sprays usually would tell you to first spray on the cloth/paper before wiping on the screen itself. but i've sprayed onto the screen directly too - only it was a 21" LCD so i wasn't worried about the liquid getting into any openings :p |
