I mentioned this to a few people at the last Ithaca GTG, and finally got a proposal worked out. In fact, I've got two possible plans for ya'll to choose from.

DATE:
May 12 (Saturday) or 13 (Sunday)

DESTINATIONS
Proposal 1:
Binghamton University Nature Preserve - the Nature Preserve has two sections. The first is on campus and has several pond and swamp areas, and rather extensive trails leading up the hillside to some wooded and field areas, all easily accessed. Across the street is a deep gully containing a stream and several small waterfalls. It is a bit more difficult to reach, but not too much so.
Aqua-Terra Park & Innsbruck - Aqua-Terra has the pond itself, with several great areas for shooting. It is especially lovely in the early morning light. There is a mown field & picnic area along one shore, and a trail leading around the pond that goes through swampland, several streams, and forest. Across the street is Innsbruck, an old ski resort, with some debris and the old trails leading up the hill.
Salt Springs State Park - Salt Springs is a short drive from Binghamton, across the border into PA. It has a large stream containing 3 good waterfalls and several lovely areas, all easily accessed. There is also a marshland and a large field that gives a great view of the surrounding hills and farms. All in all, it's one of the nicest parks I've been to.

Proposal 2:
Binghamton University Nature Preserve - details above.
Chenango Valley State Park - Chenango Valley offers two ponds/small lakes with trails around them, as well as a path leading along the Chenango River. It's all easily hiked, and is pleasant, although it tends to have more people than any of the other parks in the area.
Owego - the next small town down from Binghamton, a 15 to 20 minute drive. This may be of no interest to some, as there are no real nature locations. Instead it has a nice main street along the river, and a large scenic bridge with a sidewalk that allows for shooting over the river. There is also a large cemetery on the edge of town (5 minutes out) that has a great overlook showing the entire town and river.

Doing both sets is probably too much to expect. But either one is doable and likely to take the better part of a day. My personal preference is for the first proposal; I think it offers more and I like the locations a bit better :-) But it is worth noting that the Parks are both out away from town, so as far as lunch goes, it'd be best for everyone to bring their own and we can picnic at one of them. Salt Springs and Chenango both offer bathrooms, too.

I'm open to any opinions and input regarding where we go, this is just to get all the info out there. So who's game?!

I just saw this Brent. Sounds like a fun outing. Salt Springs state park is especially nice -- I visited it once when I was in school at Binghamton. If I recall correctly, it's also one of the few places in this region where you can see true old-growth forest. I'd definitely be interested in this, but I won't know if I can make it until closer to the date.

Wow. Now that's a forum title I'd never thought I'd see.

As a Bingo native, I'd love to go. However I find myself at the other end of the world at the moment.

Enjoy and I can't wait to see the pictures!

An update, as we're drawing nearer.

I was at Salt Springs State Park about 2 weeks ago, and the waterfalls and trails leading to them were clogged with trees down from the April snowstorm. They were passable, but only with difficulty, and the damage limited the scenic nature of them. I doubt it's been cleaned up yet.

As there has been only minor interest, I think I'm going to postpone this GTG until the Autumn, when hopefully more people will be around and interested. In addition, the foliage will be good then (hopefully), and add a whole other element.

eqsite, if you, or anyone else, does still want to come down, I'll definetly still go, but it might be better to wait.
