Okay so Bill Gates made an operating system closely resembling OSX...that's NOT the conversation I want to have here.

I have so far found LR and CS2 far more enjoyable in Vista than XP. I know that the Vista kernel manages memory better than the XP kernel. I don't really know a software kernel from a piece of corn but I know that both programs run much smoother under vista.

I'd like discussion in this thread to be about how we can tweak vista, what we have discovered, and how the programs seem to run on the new operating system. Please this is NOT a fanboy thread, I don't have enough knowledge for any of that.

What have your experiences been with Vista and photo processing software.

I think my main gripe so far is that there is no built in Raw previewer in Vista and I can't find one yet.

I love the processing and memory management by Vista as compared to XP.

Any thoughts?

Let's keep this to a discussion of Windows VS Windows, not Mac VS Windows, please :) :)

Is it that big a difference? I've ignored the whole release thing other than a couple of articles about it, as I didn't think it would really offer me anything. But if memory management is really that much better, then I'd consider it - anyone who really knows the details?

My main concern is my normal concern with version x.0 of anything. There's always bugs. It is just the nature of software. The two RAW file bugs in the last 2 weeks for Vista are a good example of that. Same with the various issues with printer drivers.

It all needs a little more time in the oven - just like Lightroom v1.0 and these out of memory issues.

I think I'll get vista when SP1 is out. If you remember back to XP pre SP2, it had a lot of similar 'quirks'

Check here for a raw viewer. Seems like they have Cannon, Nikon etc. I haven't used it yet as I'm just using Bridge to view my raw files. This should be an interesting thread as I too am playing with Vista and Adobe as well. I haven't run into any major issues as of yet.

Though read these blogs before using the Microsoft viewers There are a few issues with some Canon & Nikon RAW formats that causes them to get corrupted with the Vista RAW tools/ camera import wizard/ explorer, if you aren't careful.

i had a play with a PC with Vista on yesterday and i liked the overall performance - and it wasn't even running on a high end machine (felt very zippy)

How's everybody's experience with Vista? May be getting a laptop that is preloaded but not sure about it.

I have been using Vista Ultimate for a few weeks now and haven't looked back. Not one crash and everything runs great. I too have noticed that the memory management is much, much better. CS2 runs super smooth and starts up much faster than did using XP Pro. And yes I am using the same exact machine but did a clean install of Vista Ultimate.

I'm not worried about the RAW corruption stuff at this point because in my work flow I always have my images in 3 places. If corruption occurs, I always have 2 backups to retrieve from.

Now, about that DPChallenge Sidebar Gadget... When can we expect that? ;)
