The good news: They just hung the 2007 Juried Photography Contest in my neck of the woods. I entered "Winter Sunset", and it took 2nd place of approximately 200 entries, winning a check for $100.

The bad news? I was beaten out for first place by a freaking SKIFF SHOT! How ironic is that? jejeje™

Actually, for YOU it's even funnier: I use the term "skiff" loosely here — the actual boat was a Beetle Catboat :-) The main thing is, it was more-or-less a perfect vertical representation of my classic skiff shot that ribboned in the first minimalism challenge, except it had a mast too :-)

Probably the ultimate "I should have entered the other shot!"

hehe i feel stupid :P What do you mean by a "skiff shot"??

Well, obviously you should have photoshopped a skiff into your sunset photo.

Though that may have disqualified it....

Congratulations anyway, Bear. 2nd is better than no prize at all. ;-)

My first ribbon:

A "skiff" is, properly, a small boat, a dinghy, a rowboat, like that. I get a lot of grief from people who needle me because a LOT of my good shots have skiffs in them as compositional elements. here's another:

— That was my second ribbon, except it was right after I bought the 20D and the time/date stamp was incorrectly set. But for a little while, both my ribbons had skiffs.

Then there's this one: and this one: , both among my top-scoring images at the time and both flaunting skiffs...

Those last 3 all shot at the same location, btw: I got a lot of grief for that too :-)

Nah... There were No Rules! And guess what? Everything that was entered was, to all intents and purposes, a perfectly normal-looking photograph! :-)

Congrats. Btw, why didn't you add a skiff to your Winter Sunset shot? Just too much with the birds included?

In DPC? Because I am sensitive to the "too many skiffs" accusations :-) Of course, the BIRDS are added... As for the contest entry, if I HAD decided to drop a skiff in there, that would have been a seriously elaborate PS session to get both the skiff and its reflection right from the elevated perspective.

Anyway, I know everyone will laugh but the "reality" of the matter is that in this part of the marsh you don't SEE skiffs, just the occasional kayaker and not even that in the dead of winter. And believe it or not, I actually care that my images be reasonably faithful to what I see anyway. As far as the birds go, there WERE birds flying around during the shoot, you just don't see them with the longish exposure and the multi-image compositing.
