I had this shoot today with one of my favorite models -

here's a shot

//democard.com/photo/jessica_water.jpg

I'm concerned about the umbrella reflections in the eyes. Any post ideas on how to get them out of there? Do I need to worry about it? Sometimes I'm hypersensitive about my work - knowwhatImean?

In future shoots, short of buying some soft boxes, is there a way to shoot around this?

Thanks,

I normally avoid them but in this shot I loved it and had it printed in a 12" x 18". It looks great.

Nice shot. And personally I don't mind the umbrella shaped catch lights.

You could if you want just paint more regular (maybe octagon) shaped catch lights over them.

But, personally, I think these have a starry look to them.

I don't think you need to worry.

They do make square umbrellas.

You could set up a rectangular card and then bounce the flash off of it too.

Doug,
Did you shoot through the umbrella or reflect from inside? I like the shot, well done

I don't think they're explicitly visible as umbrellas unless you know what you're looking for. They add a unique starry catch light which is actually quite appealing, though maybe not for every shot.

Sure looks like he shot through the umbrella. Light reflected from an umbrella wouldn't typically show such strong ribbing, if I recall correctly from when I used to use them.

I don't mind the reflection, it's quite subtle. I do mind the soft hairs on het upperlip ( tiny moustache) That can easily be fixed though :-)

I agree, If the light was bounced off the umbrella the reflection wouldn't show up near as much if at all.

I like the photo posted here The sparkle effect from the umbrella draws attention to her eyes.

It was a bounce - with a warm filter on it to counter all the blue spilling from the background light. Looks like I tricked y'all. :-)

As a side note, you might want to desat the yellow channel just a bit on her teeth.

I agree. Let's lose the lip fuzz and whiten my teeth :-) I'm proud of you for resisting the urge to photoshop my imperfections...although those are two I wouldn't be opposed to! But I love the umbrella-shaped catchlight. And that lighting...you rocked it!

I have an umbrella that can be easily converted to round or square, I like it because it gives me more flexibility.

Another option would be to shoot with a ring light instead.

I think the starry catches look fine though. if anything I would have move the light to the right a bit more to light up her chin a bit more. That also would have centered the catch lights over her eyes a bit more.

The stray hair should go too. Otherwise as above... umbrella stars are OK with me.
