At the last day before voting for the Free study began, I said in a thread that I entered a photo in a catagory I have no experience in.

I also shot this photo with a view camera (polaroid) and it looked awesome. The compo was the same, but the photo itself was lighter. It looked amazing at the polaroid, if I may say ;-)

I don't know if I'm gonna try architecture more often, but looking at the final score (5.549 - 305 / 501 - 39%) and the comments (2) I know there's something to learn.

Especially the post-processing was a B.... I had no clue where to pay attention to.

This is the original file, saved for web:

I used a seperate layer for the signs with 7 and 8 on it,
to be able to adjust these seperate from the rest of the photo. Used layer masks to edit the rest, and masked the signs out.

All help for improvement would be very much appreciated!!!

I think it's great as is. I gave it a 7. The 2 things that would have bumped it up for me would be a little less space at the top (or possibly letting the reflection of the sign remain a little bit more) and a little less sharpening. Overall, though, fantastic job!

I must admit I'm not good at architectural shots/edits. However I had some free minutes to play around. I think it is important to pay attention to all kinds of gemoetry. Lines, curves, etc. are main parts. Another important thing is the atmoshpere : do you want a bright modern room or a dark, gloomy one?

Well, I did some more or less random adjustment ;)... and this is what came out:
Don't know, if I'm satisfied with the result but perhaps you find some elements that you like.

Ok, what I did:
- levels and curves for contrast (masked the sign and part of the ceiling)
- new layer, filled with horizontal gradient, colors (RGB) 162,111,23 -> white, blending mode to overlay
- adjustment layer curves without adjustment, set to screen to brighten image up
- merged layers (will reference this by *)
- duplicate *, select highlight of the layer by ctrl+leftclick on icon of the image in the RGB channel, inverted selection, duplicated the merged layer, added mask and blending mode to multiply; then duplicated the resulting layer 4 times
- duplicate *, use the "ambience" mode of the virtual photographer filter, set blending mode to screen; added a b&w gradient from bottom to top into the mask so that the bottom is not affected by the screen layer
- added vignette
- merging all layers
- USM with 20 40 0
- fine sharpening
- added gaussian blur (3,0 pixels) and masked out the sign, the middle, and several other parts

I hope every step is clear :) otherwise send me a PM

edit: removed some mistakes

I like some of the detail brought out by this edit but I prefer the duotoned color treatment. my .02

I like the image biteme. If you would have had someone walking down that hallway, I bet you would have scored a full point higher though.

One of those lost in the sea of good free study images. Looks like a super selling stock photo.
