This was my challenge entry for Lighting III - .

I wanted to rework this some and (hopefully) improve it by lightening the shadows and enhancing the sky a little.

This is the rework - .

Is it better? Worse? Suggestions on improving it?

Thanks for taking a look. Much appreciated.

I just realized the timing on posting this wasn't very smart as I need to go out and run some errands. I'll check back in later - again, many thanks.

i'm not clever enough to offer any improvements - but for my money the rework has lifted this picture enormously - the new version is really striking, mysterious and impactful (if that's a word)

I pulled both and looked at them side by side. For the most part I think the improvements help the photo stand out, “but” what helps the river, sky, bridge, and trees on the right somehow makes the trees on the left look fake, too paintbrushy (new word).

I like 'em both. I realize that's probably not helpful. The entry has warmer tones to it, which isn't to say I don't like the cooler tones of the reworked shot. The bridge seems to stand out more in the reworked shot, too.

I think the rework has given you better clarity on the clouds and on the bushes to the left foreground. However, the original is better on the bridge, the boat beyond and the vapour off the water. Even though the vapour is slightly overexposed on this side of the arch where the boat is, I prefer the warmer tones of the original in this area. The general blueness of the reworked one gives it a colder feel here. Can you combine the best parts of each into one?

I love your rework, I added it to my faves. Beautiful!

Also did a side by side, and to me, and first off, both are a pleasure to look at.
When it comes down to the rework, I like what you did to bring out the steel gray shades, especially in the clouds.

The reworked version has more 'emotion' or 'feeling' in it for me, so I'll say the rework is 'better'.

Hope that helps!

Like the original--rework while more "dramatic" has lost some of the crispness of the original.

Ok. Wow! Great feedback everyone. Thanks SO much!

Now what to do? :D Two in favor of original, three like the rework, and three for something maybe in between (think I got that right).

Overall, I'm very happy with the image in general and want to prep it for a future contest (local - needs to be a matted print). Personally, I like the original and the rework for different things - some of which were pointed out by you guys.

Hmmm...guess I'll have to think about it a little more.

Did I already say thanks? Well, if I did, I can't say it enough. Thanks!

Hmmm... I like the original better. For me, the lighting of the original forced me to look at the right side of the bridge. The rework leaves my eyes wandering around wondering what I'm supposed to be looking at (i.e. no good/strong "subject" stands out in the rework because you've basically equalized the image). The gray in the sky keeps bothering me too...
