This is one of my favorite photos. Not just because its mine but in general. I was really pleased with it but it didn't do all that well here. Strangely though, in all the comments I received I was given nothing but positive feedback. What things could I have done to get this shot to rate higher?

The first thing I notice, from a negative perspective, is that the composition is very static, divided into equal halves on a vertical axis. The second thing I notice is that her color is obscuring the bottom of her face, and this is a missed opportunity to "complete the expression", if that makes any sense? There's just not enough sense of HER here, unless you know her and can fill in the blanks.

It's a very soothing image, but these two aspects rob it of any potential "eureka" factor as far as the voting audience at large is concerned.

I really enjoyed your photo...It does a fine job of portraying a connection between the subjects. In my opinion, I belive you could have achieved a better photo by switching your aspect to portrait so as to not chop off the horse's ear and muzzle and perhaps catching the girl's hand touching the horse. I also think that the jacket is obstructing your girlfriend's face...you would have achieved even greater emotional impact with the full side of her face showing. I also think you could punch up your contast a wee bit more. Again, just my opinion - I hope it was helpful.

I also see true emotion in the photo. I think it would have been much better if you were moved over to the left when taking the photo. I realize it may not have been possible, but, if you were over more to the left, it would have opened up her face. Also the collar and her ear wouldn't have been so prominent. It would have shown more of the central point of interest...the contact point between her and the horse. All that being said, it is still a fine photo.

There IS a remarkable unity to them, isn't there? Do you realize how rare that is in here? :-) Bottom line: we can all see the sweetness and emotion in it, but you and your girlfriend can see it better than we can, because you know. When photographing for others (the DPC community) you have to work to make what you know more obvious for us, to help us share the journey.
