Every time I create a complex picture and try to create a jpeg to upload to DPC I can't get one small enough without sacrificing quality big time. I want to keep the EXIF information so I do save as. Right now I'm working on photos of snow on underbrush and I can't get them small enough without going to "5" or less in quality. Any suggestions? Thanks, Ann

This tutorial should help.

Thanks for the pointer to the tutorial. I have been doing my resizing and so on very much like this. However I have not been using "save for the web" because it is my understanding that this will get rid of the exif data and that this site requires that information be with the photos? Am I wrong?

Thanks for the help.

Yes, a little. As far as uploading challenge entries and portoflio images DPC strips the EXIF info from the file. So, you are wasting a bit of data space by keeping it intact.

Where you DO need EXIF info is on your original unaltered file, if you are requested to send it for validation on a challenge entry.

Hope that helps.

Ann, I like to keep the history of the files I work on, and saving for web gets rid of that too, so what I do is save the full sized file with a "save as" so I have all that information intact. Then I resize and save for web with the version I want to submit to DPC. I realize that by resizing after doing the "save as" to keep my full sized copy I do lose a bit, but for DPC purposes I've never noticed.

Here is the steps I take.
1. lower dpi to 72 (does a lot of reducing)
2. Image resize to 640 longest side.
3. Sharpen once to bring back detail
4. save as #dpc.jpg quality 8

exif is intact, detail good enough to see but not good enough someone can swipe and use effectively.
