How many shoots do you take for a engagement or Bridal Session?
I often do anywhere for 50-100 shoots a session (I give a CD of these images to the client use for invitations and the like, and I also use the images to produce a free photo montage slideshow to promote my video services). I am giving thought to taking fewer photos in order to concentrate on quality images rather than quanitity.

You do the shoot, GIVE them a CD and a FREE slideshow? What are you charging?

My process:

I shoot 1 session for bridal and 1 session for engagement. Each session is $100 for 1 hour, includes all processing and produces ~25-30 final finished images (I choose which ones to use). They can order copies of the images from my website or I can order them a book of all images (extra charge). Slideshow or web-sized images are extra, at $10 each, most people don't ask for many web-sized. :P

Edit: As for how many do I shoot?? hundreds sometimes, less other times. Just depends. But I only show the client the best.

I do an engagement shoot with the bride and the bride alone, out of that, she gets one 5x7 for the newspaper. If she already sent a photo to the paper, she still gets a 5x7.

For an engagement shoot of the couple, I shoot between 10-20 images and they get to pick one. I call it my signature photo. The one they pick is made into an 11x14 and framed as a 16x20 for guests to sign at the wedding. I charge $250 for this. Anything else they want from the session, they must purchase as extras.

Enagement and Bridal Portraits are included with my various wedding packages a 11 x14 B & W Enagement Print and 16 x 20 Bridal Portrait is also included. I charge anywhere from $750 to $1500. The problem I am having though is that some of my images are not as successful as others. What I mean by successful is that the posing concepts are off. So I am not sure if it is better I shoot few images with with well pre-planned poses or kinda "shoot from the hip" as I have been.

I try to shoot a few really good "posed" shots and lots of more "candid/flowing/filler" shots. I put together a slide show that runs at the reception which includes the engagement pictures (about 50-70), the bridals (about 40-60) and the events earlier that day (about 50-70 shots). This, of course, assumes that the wedding and reception are separated by at least 3 hours in order to give me time to pick and process the pictures of that day.

I find that I shoot at least double what I show. So if I'm going to show 70 pictures, I will have probably shot 150-200. With Bridals, the session is slower moving than the engagement session, and so it's more likely that I'll have about 100-150 shots to choose from.

For my packages, the engagement session is free. Even if they decide not to use me for the wedding (so far that has never happened). The bridal session is included as is an 11x14" print (though it most often gets used it as a "credit" towards an upgraded/larger print).

This is just the way I like to work it. But every photographer is different and so is your customer base ... so figure out what works best for you.
