Just wondered what people would have rated this in the Alone challenge? I took it last week at Oxford Circus...

Good human interest shot Jon, the title would have more meaning if the McDonalds adverts were more visible.

Thanks Rob. Very kind of you to spend time to look!

I wanted to get those signs stronger but the light was just too overpowering.

I think it would have fit very well in this challenge. I like how the person stands out in contrast with the rest of the image. I would have liked a little more detail and maybe even an expression visible in the person, but since it's backlit, that would be pretty hard to do. I think you got the exposure right. I'd give it somewhere between 7 and 8

This may have done well in the "ironic" challenge. A homeless (probably hungry) person sleeping next to the McDonalds signs. I think the photo would fit the "lonely" challenge better without the reference to the signs though. I like how the red is the only color showing and the red on both sides gives it a nice sense of balance. The vastness of the area gives it a real lonely feel.

I like the photo. I would have rated it a 7 probably.

Jon Lucas, I think this is a great shot. I've got very little experience with photography myself but I imagine it was difficult to get the photograph to look decent what with the strong backlight.

On a somewhat related note (and I don't want to sound callous here, because the issue of homelessness is a very serious one) for the "All Alone" challenge... now that Jon has shown it can be done, can we please avoid all of the inevitable shots of homeless people? Or people standing alone in a field? Or someone sitting alone looking forlorn in a living room chair?

Maybe I shouldn't shoot my mouth off, since I'm new here and I have a LOT to learn, but I'm dreading the submission of some very clichéd photographs in the "All Alone" challenge.

Can we push ourselves to come up with something original?

I'll be trying to do so myself, and now I'll really have to try and put my money where my mouth is. Hmmm...

Very nice image. I like the way you did the colors. One thing, the person is to far away.

Well, You sure looked hard enough! Good eye, Good shot!
But, is it Lonely or just Relaxing/Resting/Meditating in anotherwise crowded public place? :)M.

There is one guy I normally walk past on the way to work every day in Manchester once I get off the train, not your average typical kind of fellar flogging the big issue or looking smacked out of his face but a real old fellar with boots on and a long beard , wanted to shoot a picture of him sat on a set of steps as he normally does perhaps with a few pigeons around ! ( would have given the guy a tenner or summit for his time and some grub etc )

BUT ... Have I seen him since the challenge went up ... NO !

I do agree though with a comment above that had the McDonalds Ads been slightly nearer or more in focus then it would have been alot more apt, great image none the less Jon, I am a fan of your work anyhow :0)

Wish the Mcdonalds sign was a bit darker in color to balance the red of the person, but all in all from me you would have gotten a 7or 8.

You managed to take the show pretty well under that very difficult light conditions.

I think the photo suffers quite a bit from that. Sometimes the (natural or in-place) light available is just not what the composition would require.

Thanks to all of you for the helpful comments on this.

Rob/Fayepek: this guy is homeless (frequently at this station) thus the title and subtle irony with the posters.

Rgordon: I agree that loads of these shots could make for a potentially dull, cliched challenge. I'll be doing something different too.

Sonifo: I wanted the distance to help portray the gulf between contrasting lifestyles. This one was slightly closer with the people in the shot offering another viewpoint on his situation:

Palendrone: thanks - and you should get that shot anyway, even if you miss the challenge - I'm intrigued to see him now.

Love the photo---it has a very lonely feeling. Not crazy about the title--I understand it, but would agree that with that title it would be better in the ironic category.

Jon....that's a beautiful picture! Had you entered it, I would have given you a 9.....a 10 if I could have seen the guy a bit closer up.
Your pictures are awesome!! :)

I think they are both excellent photos, but the second one you posted, Walk On By was much more powerful to me.

Dunno if the masses would count it as 'all alone' - haven't really kept up on if people are 'defining' that one to death yet. I think it'd fit fine.

I would've given the first one a 7 for alone (8 for irony) and the second a 9 or 10 for all alone.
