Not to say this picture would score well, but a neon sign with a black background...against the depiction of art rule or not?

Given that the challenge is to shoot a neon sign, I doubt you'd be called for Literal Art on it (especially since the nature of the subject involves unusual lighting).

I have been wondering that myself. I will probably enter the other challenge but I drove around tonight looking at neon signs in all the restuarants and pub windows just incase I can not get the shot I want in the other challenge I need a back up idea. Some of those signs are really sweet looking. Budweiser seems to have the most of the best of em.

If you're not near Vegas or Times Square how bright is the outlook for neon?
I typed in neon and my city/state in google, not much came up. This is a good excuse to go out at night in the neon part of town. I'll be in Pennsylvania this weekend. Maybe I'll do some good neon hunting there.

I managed to shoot this about 100 yards from my front door. You don't have to go to Times Sq to find interesting Neon

It won't necessarily be "flashy" neon that wins, either. At least, I hope not. There's a fair amount of neon in down-at-the-heels urban districts. Think moody, atmospheric shots near twilight with a seedy old flophouse and a red neon "H O T E L" sign...
