I'm considering going back to school for photography (probably the Creative Circus in Atlanta). Anybody have any insight on the Circus or photography schools in general? Is it worth it?

In order to answer if its "worth" it I think you need to ask yourself some questions 1st.

For example....

Is tuition an issue? In other words, is tuition something thats not a concern or will impact your lifestyle having to pay for the education.

Aside from the obvious education, what are you hoping to directly gain from the schooling? What are your long term photography goals?

I think it is good advice to know why you are going to school and good advice about the money situation.

If you want to be a great photographer but are short of cash find a great photographer and be their assistant. You will learn more in a shorter time and make money at the same time.

There was an interesting article in American Photographer that said something about assistant jobs with major photographers are so nice that many assistants are deciding not to leave their photographers to start their own business, as has been traditional practice.

Of course many well established photographers won't take on an assistant unless you have gone to school, come highly recommennded or have a portfolio of work already that they can review.

School is a good idea if you can swing it and don't have a mentor to help you.

Yeah, an apprenticeship would be great, but it's a matter of finding a good photographer that's willing to take me on, which could be tough without schooling or a really strong portfolio. The great part about most schools is that they force you to have an apprenticeship. Then you make all the contacts to get more down the road. Anybody know of any good way of finding photogs that need assistants?

FWIW, my photography school is right here: $25 per year, with convenient locations and flexible hours. In less than 3 years, I've gone from totally inexperienced to confident that I could handle just about any photo assignment with a reasonable chance of success. I've also accumulated a decent enough portfolio to GET those assignments if I chose to do so.

I'll second scalvert's statement as DPC as a learning experience. These "challenges" can be considered trial assignments. Here you get several assignments a week and must please a client (the voters).

Secondly, NYIP is well worth your time to check out. Many established photogs have started in the courses through the New York Institute of Photography. //www.nyip.com You might want to check them out before deciding on an expensive "traditional" school.

there are as many great photogs that went to school as there are those that haven't.

School, the right school, can teach you a lot of the technical stuff, get you hands on with equipment you'd likely never see, create contacts and networking you'd never get otherwise, and let you see/try many fields of photography.

You can get a job assisting and learn that way, as well as local pro schools (TIPP, texas school NEIPP, etc) but it will take longer and you'll learn one or two ways to do something (hopefully school exposes you to more ways).

Want to portraiture and wedding then school may not help much. Want to do fashion, product, etc then school will help a lot.
