Hi all,

I so respect your opinions. I've owned a Sony F717 now for several years and I've been tickled with the results. I couldn't have asked for a better camera.

Knowing that I loved this little jewel-- anyone out there have any good current recommendations for an upgrade?

I've tried the Sony H5 -- and the chromatic abberations are so bad -- I can't stand it. I live on water and shoot heaps of water/sun/reflection shots. I want a good auto focus mode yet the flexibility to adjust settings when I have time.

Any good recommendations?

Many thanks! I know you guys know your stuff!

From the F717, I'd suggest you look at the DSC-R1.

I jumped from the 717 to the 20D. Wasn't a horrible step, but did have a bit of learning curve. I do miss my sony baby at times! It's a great camera.

I think the Sony F717 still out performs alot of the newer point and shoots, even though they may have more Mega-Pixels..

There is alot to be said about that huge barrel of zeiss glass and the swivel body (plus killer macro mode)..

I cant recommend another point and shoot, maybe its time you went the DSLR route..

If I went with the DSLR -- which one? I don't want some huge bulky thing I can't hold. Some are so overwhelming today -- and I want a good solid auto focus... and don't want to have to change all the lenses all the time :)

Why do you want to upgrade? What is it about the 717 that you want to improve on?

That will help guide what your next camera is. The short answer is most likely either a Sony R1 or a DSLR of some kind, but you just mentioned you don't want to change lenses, so I would suggest the R1.

Maybe a better question is, "What isnt the 717 giving you that you need"?

Maybe we can narrow it down from there..

Is it the speed, zoom, MegaPixels (how big do you print), lower noise at higher ISO's?

EDIT--

ZAL read my mind-- almost the same post

what do you DISLIKE about the F717?
I think this would make it a good place to start too.

Thank you for all your support.

The reason I think I would like to upgrade from the F717 is the pixels. I have people interested in my photography, but I am limited in the enlargements I can make (11x14). That is my ONLY REASON.

I love the F717 with all my heart. It's beautiful. It's me. It works so heavenly. I would just like more pixels.

I would say go with the Sony DSC-R1 if you want something similar to what you got. After that...it's going to have to be a DSLR.

If you go that route, I would say canon...but that's what I've always used. Ask a nikon user and they'll say nikon. Just not sony's DSLR, it looks and feels too cheap at the moment.

In that case, look hard at the Sony DSC-R1.
Has a huge CMOS sensor at 10.3 effective pixels.
The glass is as good (or better) than the one on the F717, from Zeiss too.
The interface should be very similar to the F717, I think.

How is the auto focus mode of the D70/D80? I am considering going that route right now...
