Most people get better at photography from this site. My scores have gone down with each entry. I am going to be getting 2's by the end of next week.

I haven't started voting yet because I am heading off to bed. But, I did glance through a few pages of thumbnails and it looks like this will be very difficult to vote on; there are many nice images whose subjects don't seem very stationary to me. I think I will have to do a lot of mind stretching in this challenge.

I agree! I just had a quick glance at the thumbnails too and there are a lot of moving people/animals/things in this challenge. Very odd, did people not know what the word "stationary" meant?

Adjective

stationary

1. not moving

For a few moments, the train remained stationary, before lurching forward along the track.

2. incapable of being moved
3. unchanging

Doing quite a bit better than I had thought it would be doing at 38 votes

I woke up to 5.9 and was excited until I hit Update and it instantly dropped to 5.6. It's recovered to 5.7 so far. Wasn't sure how this one would be received, and with swings like that it looks like it might be a love/hate thing with the voters. Should be an interesting week.

I think that most know what the word means. There just doesn't seem to be enough contrast between the subjects normal movement and its not moving, or between the subject and its environment. Stationary is a relative concept, as everything is in motion; even a rock is in motion as its molecules bounce around and the rock spins with the earth and hurls through space around the sun. Something that looks stationary does so because relative to our perspective, it could be moving but isn't, it is not moving when a force is acting on it, or it is not moving in comparison to its surroundings. There are other ways to show 'stationary' but those are the ways I anticipate seeing most.

The concept of stationary relies heavily on perspective and personal experience. My perspective isn't neccessarily the same as the photographers, and I wasn't present during their shoot, so the photographer will have to draw me into his/her viewpoint so I can see it as he/she does. I think the best photos will be the ones that do so most effectively. Voting on otherwise nice photos that do not do so effectively will be difficult.

And, now that I've written all this out, I think I have a clearer idea of how to proceed.
