Stolen Picture on SmugMug

Here is the picture I took for dpchallenge.com

Just wanted to let you know. Perhaps you can find some of your picture in the portfolio because he seems to be stealing alot of pictures!

I've sent the site administrator an e-mail demanding that they close that photographers account.

Not that this excuses anything but it looks like he's just collecting portraits that he likes. I'm guessing he didn't photograph Einstein or Robert Redford either. Not to mention that a bunch are watermarked to stock agencies.

Actually, his whole portfolio seems to be full of things he didn't photograph/paint/print, etc. Weird.

Yes...some of the images have the copyright on them and it is plain obvious that majority are not his...but regardless, I checked it out and he has got them all for sale.

Look Closer. They are for sale! mostly 4x6 size.

They seem to have strict copyright terms in their terms and conditions so how come he can have magazine covers, pics works of art, posters and from the shots appears to have roamed the earth, and he is allowed to sell them - at any size?

The same way anyone can take things and put them up in a gallery until they're caught.

And this one is by Elliot Erwitt - and what's more, in it are some of magnum's most famous photographers; at least four other of the black-and-whites are by Erwitt too.

Looks like the person is using Smugmug to link for a blog.

I saw quite a few in many galleries that originated from DPC challenges. Problem is I know they originated here but cannot find them here - don't know the photog.

I'm not familiar with SmugMug. Do you actually have to enable selling for each photo or is it something that's automatically on? The ones I checked looked like they were just set at base prices. Just seems odd that someone would intentionally be trying to sell something with a big fat watermark over it.

By default, you can sell the pictures. You have to go and manually change to not make photos available to sell. At least, that's how it is with my account

I will drop a note to the smugmug people.

He looks like he might be a middle school teacher....which might explain the wide variety....but he should not be selling them.

I have a smugmug site and will visit the admins at digitalgrin.

This suggests the user may not even be aware the photos are for sale ... and it is -- if you pardon the language -- a stupid way to have the default setting.
