I've been thinking a lot over the last few weeks about my life and a ton of other things. I've also been reading a book called "Vagabonding" by Rolf Potts...which has been truly inspiring.

Traveling around the World has always been a dream of mine....especially in the last two years or so. But I've never had the oppoutunity to actually drop everything and go backpacking through Europe and Asia. At this point in my life I'm in the perfect position to take a long term "suspension" from my "normal" life and go see the world....

I am wondering how many of you guys across the pond would be willing to show me around your town/country and maybe let me sleep on your couch for a few nights. Staying in hotels and buying food are the main expenses of traveling...so by staying with guests I would save a lot of money, and get to meet a heck of a lot of cool people also.

I'm just looking for some people who would let me stay with them for anywhere from a night or two...to a couple of weeks. Kind of like a Network of DPCer that I can base the route of my travels on. I would of course bring my camera along and update DPC so you can follow along in my journey.

So....if anyone in the UK, Europe, or Asia would be able to show me around and give me a place to stay for a little while, just let me know. Heck...even if you don't have a place to stay and you just want to meet up with me, let me know.

You can just post in this thread and I'll give you a pm..... Whenever I get enough people interested I want to get a map of Europe and map out a tentative trail....that would be kinda cool.

Caleb

You're welcome to stay at my place, I have a spare bedroom/bathroom.
I live in the outskirts of Brussels, which is an easy 15' commute by bus.

Make him at least do the dishes and be sure to lock up your valuables - you never know about these vagabonds. ;-)

not over the pond but wanted to tell you that that is cool. Do it now while you still can. I wish I had the opportunity to do that and I really haven't had the opportunities a normal Navy career would give so I am very envious of you right now.

Have fun, be safe and take lots of images (and probably batteries too)!

You can come and stay with us in Sweden if you want. Give me a little notice though, because I'm off travelling myself quite a bit. I'm not really an "authentic" Swede (I'm American), but I've been living here for 9 years and know the territory and some beautiful spots. Both Copenhagen, which is very close, and the countryside are very beautiful here in the summertime.

You will have to do the dishes and go out shooting with me, though! :-)

Thanks a bunch for the offers guys!

I'll probably try and compile a list of people with addresses, phone numbers, and the like.

I have actually thought about doing this in the US....but, for right now my main interest lies in outside of this country.

You would be very welcome to visit us in Yorkshire. We've plenty of room and have lots of beautiful countryside/historic towns and buildings. ~weather isn't great but you can't have everything!

Only time we will not be around is August due to daughter's wedding!

Don't stop at Robert's.........you will be doomed. Once you have tasted his cooking you won't want to leave. Believe me... I have been there.

Hey Caleb. If you do end up doing this in the US I'm pretty sure you could stay at my place for a few nights. I'd be happy to show you around DC.

What a great goal. Don't believe for a minute that one can't do this at an older age. Look at John Steinbeck and Travels with Charly. He was over 50 when he hit the road, and got one of his best books out of it. If you decide to hit just the US. I have a couch, and even a tent if you prefer the great outdoors. I wish your dream to come true. My cousin did the same thing during the late 60's and he lived in caves in Greece and even just setting down on a beach in the Mediterranean to catch a few zees. He actually wrote a book about it called "From Alter Boy to Vagabound" Not sure if it was ever published. He is currently a journalist up in Maine, so his writing experience got him a job. Could be the same for you. You may even end up being a world photojournalist. Just stay away from Iraq. We don't want to lose you to a civil war.
