Going to Chicago next week and one of my goals is to shoot some killer night skyline shots from one of these landmark towers. I've visited the John Hancock observation deck several times over the last many years, but have never visited the SkyDeck of the Sears building. Which should I go for on my trip? Web links indicate that the John Hancock building is open later (11:00 compared to 8:00 for the Sears). Aside from that, anybody got any preferences or advice??
Also, the John Hancock site invites photography but specifically disallows tripods (bummer). Anybody know about the Sears tower policy?? |

Well, if one closes at 8pm, and the other at 11pm, why not do one then the other? :o)

Personally I prefer the John Hancock building for photography because of the open observation deck. I had problems with glare and reflections at the Sears building. The view really is fantastic at both though and I agree with Manic. If you have the time and the resources, do both. Have fun and good luck!

| Last fall, I used a mini tripod at the John Hancock and no one objected or stopped me. But I didn't ask either. |

The skydeck at the Sears tower has an email address, why not just ask them.

I shot from the Hancock in the Fall of '04, and collected my one and only blue ribbon from that shoot:
Here is pano stitched from several shots; the above DPC challenge submission was one of these.
The Hancock observation deck is nice because you can shoot right up against the glass. Even so, I still had problems with reflections, however. I would recommend taking a blackout sheet at least 8 inches square that you can shoot thru. I also strongly recommend getting up there just before sunset (just after 5:50 PM CST next week) and shooting as night falls. Hopefully you will have clear or partly cloudy conditions.
During my '04 shoot up there, I braced the lens shade against the glass and was able to get clear shots at 24mm, 1/8 second (I think even some good ones at 1/4s).
I'd sure like to repeat that shoot from the Sears, but I do have concerns about the amount of reflections...

There you go - perfect answer. Or why choose - do one tonite and the other the next night, If you have this much trouble making a small choise like this - how will you choose which lens to use?
Or worse - What ISO setting and F-Stop? - Only joking - I am jealous - I want the oppurtunity to get to places like this to take somepics - The roof of my house not really known for the wonderful view. LOL :-)

I've been to Sears twice... once at day and once at night. I remember seeing a sign that said "Flash Photography not allowed" Which I thought was pretty stupid since the flash would just bounce off the window. But I guess that's for people taking their friend's picture with the city behind them.
Anyway... to the point. The deck is very dark so you can get a good view outside (plus it minimizes reflections). And I remember seeing people there with tripods.
