I currently have 2 weddings and 2 family portrait sessions in the works. I am just beginning to shoot for more than fun, and I think I need an external flash for my Rebel XT. What do you think? I am afraid that in the church it will be super dim. I also am considering studio lighting (on the cheap.) Help, please!

You'll never regret bying a Canon 580ex and a diffuser to match...

Lots of punch and good feature set...

I have I believe the 420 and it seems a little slow but good for the money. I would recommend if you can afford it Canon Speedlite 580EX Flash. But if your like me you might have to get the lower model. I shoot my first weeding in two weeks. I hope it works, I wanted to get a better lense too that I could go down to 2.8 which will help when you can't use a flash. Bounce when you can too.

You can get 2 of the sigmas for the price of the 580, and having 2 would be so sweet.

Looking at the Sigmas myself.

not much difference between 550EX and 580EX, for the price anyway...... two 550's if you can afford it, if not, one 550 and one 420

Can somebody comment on the quality of the sigma flash? I had a sigma 75-300 zoom lens, that had the unfortuante characteristic of not being able to zoom to infinity. If I manually focused, and held it there, I could focus on infinity, but auto-focus or manual focusing and letting go it would snap out of infinity. Anyway, I have a lot of slightly out of focus shots!

For that reason, I'd like to hear a little feedback on the quality of their flashes.

Thanks!

eTTL-2 is the biggest difference, and it is big one fort a wedding photog as eTTL 1 sucks - very inconsistent.

M--E - You need to replace that 28-80 lens you got there - get something better or at least a 50 1.8. You can't use flash during the ceremony at many weddings and a 3.5-5.6 lens without flash in a dark church won't work well.

For studio strobes, the only two i hear are worth getting (for budget concious buyers) are Alien Bees (two 400s should be fine for most things) or the Paterson Interfit Stellar strobes like this one. Paterson makes lots of lights. the colorflash models are not good, avoid them.

Me, I'm going for ABs, probably in 2 or 3 weeks. I'd love to get them sooner, but no place to put them as my studio space is getting rehabbed and the dining room is full of all my camera gear - no fun to get a new toy and not be able to open the box LOL. There are better sofboxes than the AB ones, this one for example but you're gonna have to pay for the quality now or pay twice later. the shoot thru brolly box is pretty decent.
