I'm struggling with the voting. I don't have an image submitted to this challenge so I think it's okay if I air my frustration here.

In my opinion the images with the following do not meet the challenge:
- blur achieved through shallow depth of focus - no panning.
- blur achieved through background moving (with stationary subject) - no panning.
- blur achieved through everything being out of focus - hey it's a bad shot but maybe it'll do okay in this challenge
- blur achieved through camera movement (with stationary subject) - panning, but not as it should be.

Am I being too picky?

I almost wish we could see the shutter speeds.

Paul some anonymous commenter gave me a comment already that said "Looks like you were in a moving vehicle." Like that would have been cheating. As it was I was standing still and PANNED my 200mm lens with the subject who was about 5 feet away shot at 1/30th. What the? Very few did this with panning as you say and for that they should be scored low. My scores now are a major disappointment. If this shot doesn't get a six, I will not enter another challenge for at least six months.

I agree completely PaulE. For the record I do have an entry, that is doing poorly, which is what it deserves as quite frankly it's a pretty mediocre pic. However, at least it was acheived by motion panning. In addition to the obvious DNMC's you mention, there's a couple of others I noticed where I wasn't entirely sure what had been done (possibly something in PP). I just chose not to vote on these as it didn't seem fair to vote low if I couldn't articulate my reason for doing so.

If it makes you guys feel better both my wife and I are voting generously to the genuine motion panning shots. Didn't even consider this challenge for myself because of the technical aspect - therefore giving credit to those who gave it a fair shot.

thanks PaulE. if you and your wife could both vote mine about 20, then my average might just about scrape above 5.000. :)

i have hidden one post that contained a reference to a specific challenge entry, and have edited another that contained a wholly unnecessary attack on a user.

please keep this thread civil.

I agree with you. I think this challenge is one of the lowest I've voted on so far. A lot of people really missed the mark. And no, I didn't enter.

Doesn't it look like alot of people used motion blur? Wasn't that illegal!?
02/08/2006 11:01:56 AM · #23
I dont have an entry but I agree that most missed the mark on motion panning. I to am having a hard time voting.

Ummm, Rikki? Don't you think it's about time you went out and got a *job* doing this stuff and let the rest of us pursue our silly hobbies? Hmmm? Just sayin'.....

Paul tell you wife and I am telling you thanks.

It is so frustrating when you work so hard and you know your image has that pop and it doesn't get the consideration it deserves. I am honest enough to know that most of the scores (not all) I have gotten in the past are about where they should be in relationship to the others in that challenge.

I have also decided I will not enter a challenge with over 300 entries since I know I couldn't be fair voting on that many I wouldn't expect anyone else to be able to give my shot a fair vote.

But this challenge is baffling to me. I would say out of 107 entries there are maybe only 20 or 30 that even meet the challenge. Out of those very few have that pop. you know the ones you stare at and go "Wow." I think mine does that, I made it my wallpaper on my computer I liked it so much. To have some say "looks like taken from vehicle, not panning." and to do it without leaving a name is grotesque to me. I should have a way to report that to the SC and have it removed. My shot is so good he thinks I am cheating. Nice.

Well as I said, if this image doesn’t score at least a 6 and end up in the top 20% of this challenge I am out of here for at least 6 months. It will be obvious to me either I am living in a dream world or people here don’t know a good photo, or should I say not enough people here know what good photography is.

As far as comments remember people, these are not just abstract pictures to fling your personal peeves at, there are people who worked hard to come up with what you are looking at and at least put their work out there to be judged, the least you can do is be polite when commenting on an image even if you don’t like it be nice.

Oh and I am at a 5.98 right now so you might have to put up with me over the next six months after all, it's only the first day of voting.

There was no personal attack in this post. How could there be the person didn't leave their name on the comment calling me a cheater? There was a discriptive word in this post that obviously was considered ofensive to someone in the SC. Oh but it's ok to accuse me of cheating on my image, that isn't getting edited out is it?
