OMG this is making me crazy!! In the last 3 days I have purchased a flash-based web template, taught myself to use dreamweaver, taught myself to edit in Flash and now have a great start to a flash-based website.

BUT - how do I upload the .swf to my website? The template creates 2 finished files, one HTML (that I can insert) and one .swf (I cannot insert).

Any tips?

Are you just using the ftp through dreamweaver? I've never had any problems with it myself. Maybe your host doesn't allow flash?

the question might be answered better knowing if the host allows .swf files to be uploaded. some hosts don't allow some files like exe cgi and such. So maybe an email sent to your host's support will yeild a better response.

What actually happens when you try to upload the swf file?
01/29/2006 05:08:44 PM · #5
You should just be able to drag the .swf from the file directory on the right into the section of the html page as if you were inserting a normal image.

Save the html file, then "put" both files to the server.

What bit goes wrong?

I'm sure the issue is me.... First, my previous site is built with Yahoo Site builder (which does allow flash). The problem seems to be this: When I would normally insert html into the page layout, I do it with an insert tool. There is no insert tool for flash and I can't drag the flash movie (.swf file) into the box where I would normally edit the html. I'm going to try to ftp it directly to a blank webpage and see if that works....

You upload the html file to the directory you want it in then you upload the swf file to the directory the html file is looking for it to be in. Then when the html file is loaded the swf will be too.

Hey Idnic, I see u having problems. Maybe I can help u out.

First of, u can drag flash files directly into dreamweaver.
When u click in the topbar "Insert" scroll down to "Media" and then hit Flash. A quick way for this is : CTRL+ALT+Ftext

Once u've done that, u have to change your link that automaticly gets created by Dreamweaver like for example "MyDocuments/MyWeb/Files/index.swf"

This link should be on your root (ftp) as ../filename.swf
Or the whole link like "//www.yoursite.com/web/filename.swf"

I hope this helps your problem, if not -( sorry!

I like it. I would have the music off by default because a lot of people (including me) hate that (mostly because I always have music running and it just hurts my head having two tuns playing) and have a longer track (it repeats quickly).

This depends on audience but I always like to see a low bandwidth version available as an option (save as a cookie for that same user). This would be sans music and maybe a chunk of the flash.

Also, do you plan to have enough photo samples or styles that you need categories? If so you might want to think about how to show that (probably different categories across the top).

Thanks for having a peep, Rob. The buttons at the bottom (thumbnails) will each be diff categories when I'm finished. Each containing about 4 or 5 images. I'm a little stuck on that part of the editing right now heheee

The music was with the flash template I started with and I guess I just got used to it listening to it endlessly for the past 3 days. I'll look into finding something else.

Oh, and I do plan to have a flash-free version, its baby steps right now - I'm NOoooooooooooooo webmaster! :)

I really like that template, it has a good smooth running.
Very slick looking Idnic, keep it up!

:D Thanks! I chose that one for its simplicity. I like a no-frills look but with punch!!

Just hope I can manage to finish the editing this year. What you see thus far has taken me about 72 hours straight - tough learning curve.

Still, I'm so excited.....

I HATE having music played at me that I didn't ask for, it is a HUGE turnoff for me.

I like the simplicity of the style - when there isn't much to look at as far as color, background, shapes etc is concerned, it does concentrate all my attention on the photos.

The transition is smooth from one frame to the next, but when I want to skip a few, I have to watch all of them scroll by. This may not be a problem with only 5 slides, but will become an issue when you have more.

Plus, I am lazy and I like having a slideshow that lets me play them automatically - at MY choice of speed - or at least via keyboard clicks, too.

btw - the template is from hypertemplates.com and cost $67. For the price, I'm willing to learn.

I hear ya about the music, beetle. Will work on that. As for the rest of the navigation, I hope to finess that as i add more images.... wish me luck.

Very nice Cindi! I like this a bunch. Very professional looking. It's simple and uses your photos for impact rather than the design. Pat yourself on the back. I look forward to seeing it all done.

Thanks, Bren! So glad you like it too! :D I'm still tweeking the little stuff, my brain is too fried tonight to do much more. I'll attack again tomorrow.

Thank you for the offer of help, Travis. I may contact you tomorrow when I jump back into this, its a bit over my head.

The site looks great. Simple and elegant. If this is your first go at Flash then you've done very well to edit it this far. As usual its often the last 5% that seems to take so long working through the fine details. Its worth it when finished though. :)

I can offer help to create an on/off switch for the music if you like. Just let me know.

Looks like it's in strobe mode. lol Sorry I couldn't resist. I have never seen one do that so I have no idea what it could be. I'm sure someone will know. BTW, I thought you were finished for today. ;)

Don't look at the screen doing that too long or you will be having one. Dang that will make you dizzy. I did notice it's doing it on all but the last photo. Did you make some changes on the first photos but not the last one? Or were you working on something in flash?
01/29/2006 10:01:46 PM · #25
I was working in flash and the odd thing is i worked ONLY on that last shot - and reordered something in the 'about' page that isn't showing up. went backward and undid everything, but its still flashing like mad. Tomorrow may be a do-over :(
