I have tried numerous times to get this lens in focus for subjects farther than 30 feet, but can't seem to get it... I'm wondering if the lens needs calibration. My portraits with this lens (around 10 to 20 feet) look great... here are a couple of pictures at 100% crop so you can judge if it needs calibration. Funny thing is that my Tamron 28-75 2.8 has the same problem with subjects farther than 30 feet... Can any one tell me if these are soft, good, out of focus,etc...? Thanks

Man, those shots look crummy. I was having similar problems with my Canon 70-200 f/4. Had to send it in to Canon for recalibration. Works fine now. If you're having silimar problems with more than one lens, it could mean that the body is at fault.

Wow, if you live somewhere in proximity to a Canon shop, I'd send both the body and the lens in. Those shots are simply uncharacteristic of that lens.

You need to send both the lens and the body in to Canon. It will take about 2 weeks to get back. They will calibrate the lens to the body. I also had to do the same for my 20D and 70-200 f4L.
Good luck

I'm having the same problem with my new tamron lens you mentioned. I thought it was me. Didn't think about the lens. Today's shooting went very awfully. I was thinking, I know it wasn't cold outside and I didn't have a lot of coffee...

Thanks for posting. Think I'll send in my tamron...

Maybe it's just a Canon thing???

It does sound like it might be the autofocus plane in the camera, if it happens with more than one lens. I had to send in a 300D body for a similar problem. They replaced the back-focus plane, and that fixed AF issues for all my cameras. ( mine was more of an AF speed/lock issue, but also affected more than one lens )

Thanks all... I guess I have a defective L lens and 20D... It's funny, cause at close distances the images are just amazing... same thing when I use my 17-40L, 50 1.8 MKII, and EF-S 10-22... Guess I'll have to send all of them in for calibration... Funny thing is that this is my second copy of the 20D, the first one was much worse... Maybe i should sell it and get a 5D... what are your thoughts on the 5D? Or mabye a 1D MKII N... Don't need the resolution... just want something that will focus fast and accurate...

Try to stick with the 20D if you still have the patience. It is considered to be an excellent camera and can indeed hold its own against the 20D for those who do not want the extra resolution.

Another major benefit is that because of the crop factor, your long telephoto lenses will work out to being more efficient for your wildlife shooting.

Also, if you go with either of those cameras, your 10-22 will no longer be useful to you and you will lose money on that lens too.

The 20D is capable of being an excellent camera, don't worry about that, you have just been unlucky or something.

It could be camera shake rather than a problem with the lens. Camera shake is a common problem with telephoto images.
